Stoughton Police Chief Shastany to Leave Post

Police Chief Paul Shastany has announced his intent to retire.

STOUGHTON, MA - Police Chief Paul Shastany has announced his intent to retire.

Selectmen Chairman Joseph M. Mokrisky made the announcement Monday in an email to his fellow board members, according to the Boston Globe.

While Shastany did not give a reason for his resignation, Mokrisky said he believes town politics played a role in his decision.

Shastany has been Stoughton’s chief of police for six years and has been credited with cleaning up a department plagued with scandals, including two officers who were convicted of corruption charges, and a third officer who resigned.

Shastany’s last day will be April 29.

A selectmen meeting is scheduled at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday to address the news.

The police department’s only public comment has been a Facebook post thanking Shastany for his work.
