Stoughton Residents Make Strides Against Breast Cancer

Peggy's Patriots of Stoughton were among the 40,000 people who took part in the 19th annual Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk in Boston earlier this October.

On Sunday, October 2, of Stoughton were among the 40,000 people gathered along the Charles River Esplanade to support the 19th annual American Cancer Society’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer in Boston.

It was the 17th time Peggy’s Patriots have taken part in the event.

Making Strides was an inspiring event that united the entire community to honor and celebrate breast cancer survivors, educated women about prevention and early detection, and raised $3 million to help the American Cancer Society save lives and create a world with less breast cancer and more birthdays, by helping people stay well and get well, by finding cures, and by fighting back.

Peggy’s Patriots was formed in memory of Peggy Waterman, a Brockton woman who died from Breast Cancer in 1976.  Peggy’s Patriots also walk in honor of dozens of others who have been touched by cancer.

“We walk to support over 50 friends and family with any form of cancers, and we walk in memory of over 50 other friends and family members who lost their battles with cancer,” Waterman’s daughter, Diane Allen, said.

In September, Peggy’s Patriots held their fourth annual Stride-a-thon at in Stoughton to fundraise for the Making Strides walk.

Making Strides in Boston is the nation’s oldest and largest one-day walk to fight breast cancer.
