Stoughton Schools Superintendent Evaluation Moved To 2019

Superintendent Marguerite Rizzi is now on a two-year evaluation cycle, moving her next review to 2019.

STOUGHTON, MA — Superintendent Marguerite Rizzi will have one more evaluation before her expected retirement next year.

The school committee voted at a recent meeting to switch Rizzi from a yearly evaluation schedule to a bi-yearly review with a mid-cycle report in June. The change puts Rizzi on a similar review schedule as Stoughton teachers, who are allowed to switch to a two-year schedule if they score proficient for two reviews in a row. Rizzi said she has done so for the last six.

Previously, the superintendent gave a mid-year review, followed by an evaluation before the town election. The evaluation consisted of individual reviews from all five school committee members, a single review that compiled the five reviews, and a presentation.

Rizzi’s contract does not have any language regarding a review, it only requires the superintendent to have mutually agreed upon goals with the school committee.

Committee member Sandra Groppi said the majority of school districts in Massachusetts have their superintendents on the two-year evaluation cycle.

All five members were supportive of the change and committee member Anita Hill said she’s optimistic that this could mean larger goals.

“This process makes more sense in the end,” Groppi said.

The change does not lock the committee into the two-year cycle and a new superintendent could be contractually obligated to yearly reviews if the committee chooses to put that in their contact.

Rizzi signed a two-year extension in late 2016 which brought her contract to August 2019. At the time, she said she expects to retire when her contract expires.
