Stoughton Serviceman Receives Medal for Boston Marathon Bombing Bravery

Staff Sergeant Geoffrey Curtis received the Soldier's Medal for running towards explosions at the 2013 Boston Marathon.

A Stoughton native and member of the Massachusetts National Guard was honored Monday for helping injured runners, volunteers, and spectators at the 2013 Boston Marathon.

Staff Sergeant Geoffrey Curtis, 24, became the fourth member of the state’s National Guard to receive the Soldier’s Medal for running towards explosions on Boylston Street, according to CBS Boston.

While watching the 2013 edition of the race, Curtis and three of his friends assisted first responders by helping evacuate the wounded and securing the scene.

The Army spent two years confirming their actions. The award is one of the highest honors a military member can earn during peace time.
