Stoughton Superintendent Gets Two More Years

Marguerite Rizzi will remain the superintendent until August 2019.

STOUGHTON, MA — Stoughton’s top school official will remain in town for at least two more years.

Earlier this month, the school committee voted 3-1 to extend Superintendent Marguerite Rizzi’s contract by two years, keeping her in Stoughton until Aug. 5, 2019. Joseph McDonough voted against the contract and Joaquin Soares was overseas at the time of the meeting.

“I just think it’s the right thing for Stoughton,” Chairperson Katie Pina-Enokian said at the time of the vote.

McDonough said his dissenting vote was due to the terms of the contract and not the quality of Rizzi’s work.

“It’s not anything to do with the superintendent’s ability. I think she’s doing a great job, the terms of the contract are what I’m against,” McDonough said. “I think the salary is getting too high and not being able to get rid of the sick time buyout is an issue.”

Pina-Enokian responded that the salary was comparative to area schools, noting that a new superintendent with less experience could bring in a similar salary.

At the Nov. 15 school committee meeting, Soares said in a statement that he felt the scheduling of the vote on Nov. 1 was intentional because he was against extending the contract.

Rizzi has been the superintendent since 2009. According to the proposed fiscal year 2018 budget, Rizzi is set to make $193,414.
