Stoughton's New Chief Sworn in

The ceremonial swearing in of Police Chief Donna McNamara took place at Stoughton High School Monday.

STOUGHTON, MA — Former Stoughton Police Chief Paul Shastany said at his swearing-in ceremony nearly seven years ago that his successor would come from within the police department. His promise came true Monday night with the ceremonial swearing-in ceremony of new Police Chief Donna McNamara.

McNamara has been the chief for about a week. She was formally sworn-in at a selectmen's meeting following a vote by the board to approve her contract.

Shastany, who appointed McNamara the interim chief when he retired last year, was the main speaker at Monday’s ceremony, telling those in attendance that the new chief made him better in communicating his desire to move the department forward.

“I know Donna will make incredible strides and eclipses what I have tried to do. You will see professional development; leadership; accountability; commitment; and most of all, pride of service to the community. I think she will bring the best to this public we serve,” Shastany said.

Also in attendance were members of the office of state Rep. Lou Kafka, state Rep. William Galvin, members of Stoughton District Court, area chiefs, Norfolk County Sheriff Michael Bellotti, and local officials and residents.

In her remarks, McNamara thanked those who helped her during her career and said the department will meet their core values.

“My commitment to you is I will not betray your trust. I will not compromise my integrity. I will always strive to bring the Stoughton Police Department to the highest level of service because it’s what this community deserves,” McNamara said.
