Straight Teeth: Much More than Just A Pretty Smile

Can Result in More Self Confidence and Better Overall Health

“Straight teeth are good for a lot more than just having a pretty smile,” says Dr. Andrew Chase of ARCH Orthodontics in Stoughton. “Most people don’t inherit perfect teeth. Even many celebrities who appear to be part of the ‘lucky looks’ club have probably had some Orthodontic work,” he says, listing examples such as Faith Hill, Tom Cruise, , Madonna, Khloe Kardashian, and Emma Watson (photo – Harry Potter star)

Whether a person is 4 or 84, Dr. Chase, a long-time member of the American Academy of Orthodontists (AAO), talks to prospective patients about “the importance of having your smile straightened” and how a highly-trained Orthodontist uses braces to gradually move teeth into correct positions. He gives several reasons people should “take care of their smile”:

(1) Appearance. Straight, white teeth are attractive and give an improved bite that prevents excessive tooth wear and possible jaw joint problems (TMJ). Crowded or crooked teeth can lead to swollen, bleeding gums since it‘s difficult to brush and floss around them!

(2) Healthier teeth. Straight teeth get fewer cavities, are less likely to have problems with discoloration, uneven wear and fractures. Gums are healthier so you’re less likely to develop periodontal (gum) disease.

(3) Self-confidence. Feel better about yourself. An attractive appearance and smile can help in your professional and social life.

(4) Longer life. Studies have shown that people who floss daily may live 7 years longer than those who don’t. A study in the American Journal of Cardiology showed that people with gum disease are about 30% more likely to suffer coronary artery disease. Straight teeth are easier to keep clean.

(5) Prevent fracturing. Protruding (buck) teeth are easily broken from an accidental fall, sports-related injury, playground mishaps or car accidents. Moving teeth back inside your mouth improves chances of avoiding tooth injury. For anyone who plays contact sports, a mouth guard is recommended during Orthodontics and after.

After graduating from dental school, Orthodontists study for another two or three more years to focus on Orthodontics and Dento-facial orthopedics at an accredited residency program. Only after this formal education can one be called an Orthodontist. Not everyone who does orthodontics is an orthodontist. You should be aware of the differences and know that experience matters.

Today, about 30% of ARCH’s patients are adults. “Increasingly, people realize the value of a healthy, great smile,” says Dr. Chase. “And with choices of nearly invisible braces, nobody else has to know. We tell patients, ‘Your smile is a reflection of you.’” (continued…)
