Summer Infant Video Monitor Rechargeable Batteries Recalled Due to Burn Hazard

Summer Infant is recalling the rechargeable batteries in its Summer Infant handheld color video monitors. About 80,000 batteries are being recalled. Approximately 58,800 units were recalled in February 2011.

The monitors were sold at a variety of merchants, including Babies “R” Us and online retailers from February 2010 through 2012, and cost between $150 and $350. There are 15 monitors with these batteries involved in the recall.

According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, Summer Infant received 22 reports of overheated and ruptured batteries, which in some cases included smoke and minor property damage.

The batteries involved in the recall are between 1 ½” tall by 2 ¼” thick, are black in color and marked with “TCL” on the lower right corner of the battery. The monitors are sold with a matching camera and A/C adaptors. Batteries involved in the recall have one of these letter and number combinations in the beginning of the serial number on the back of each battery:
