Woman Struck Crossing Park Street; Driver Charged With OUI

A Whitman man was arrested Sunday night after allegedly striking a woman crossing the street.

STOUGHTON, MA — A Whitman man was arrested Sunday night after allegedly striking a woman crossing the street.

At 9:37 p.m., a woman crossing Park Street was struck by a white van driven by 38-year-old Vairo Martins of Whitman, according to the Stoughton Police Department. Martins was arrested at the scene and charged with operating under the influence of alcohol, negligent operation of a motor vehicle, and unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle.

The victim suffered serious injuries and was taken to a hospital in Boston. As of early Monday morning, the an update on the woman's condition and her identity have not been released.

Shortly after the crash, the road was closed from Kingsley Street to Wentworth Avenue, police said.

The crash is being investigated by the Stoughton Police Department and Norfolk County District Attorney's office.
