A Chance For A Fresh Start

With the election over, and some time before our new Selectmen are sworn in and seated, we find ourselves with a window of opportunity.

The town is divided... just about evenly, it turns out. People characterize these halves in different ways, but - whatever you label them - it's hard to argue they don't exist.

Yesterday Chuck Woodard signed into the One Sudbury group, just as he said he would before the election. Thank you, Chuck. Len Simon published a conciliatory letter right here on the Patch, and - with a few accusatory exceptions - a lot of the bile has been taken out of the Patch comments in recent days. The new Patch design seems to encourage people to create real identities, and stop throwing rocks from behind cute and anonymous screen names.

It seems there's an opportunity for us to build some bridges as Summer kicks in, to break through the digital divide, maybe have a coffee with someone on the "other side," try to find common ground.

I plan to do so myself, and encourage everyone else to do the same. Let's see if we can get to that first 5-member BOS meeting with what we'd hoped for... better representation of the diverse points-of-view that characterize Sudbury right now.

One thing is for sure... we can only get there together.
