SUDBURY, MA — A 19th-century barn in Sudbury is set to become an immersive art installation this month.
Two artists, Molly Gallentine and James Leonard, created "The T-Shirt Shop at the End of Civilization," a three-story installation at Maynard Farm in Sudbury. A series of free public events will run from Sept. 13 through Sept. 20.
Visitors can navigate the barn on their own "Fool's Journey" through a web of brightly colored lines. The installation also features garments rescued from the waste stream and collaged with text, along with displays of found objects, including a mountain of mirrors and unclothed mannequins.
The artists said the work asks visitors to consider what happens when the psychological space of social media feeds is recreated in a physical setting. It also raises questions about where society ends and the self begins, what civilization means and what may come next.
Three accompanying events will feature an aerialist performing on 20-foot silks, a science fiction author discussing imagined life after the apocalypse and a long-table dinner for 40 people beneath the installation. The Sept. 20 program will include a gallery event and reading, according to author Tim Weed's event schedule.
All events are free and open to the public. Donations will be accepted. Schedule details and reservation information are available through Leonard's event page.
Gallentine is an award-winning nonfiction writer, vocalist and event planner from Jersey City, NJ; while Leonard is an internationally exhibited visual artist and dancer from Brooklyn, NY.
The artists have worked together for more than 10 years. Their previous work has appeared in Hyperallergic, Brooklyn Magazine and Smithsonian.
