Dedication Ceremony for the Dr. William H. Smith Auditorium at Curtis Middle School

I am writing to express my sincere gratitude to Selectboard Member Dan Carty, LS School Committee Member Maura Carty and Police Chief Nix for representing our community at the dedication ceremony on September 26th to rename the Curtis Middle School auditorium the Dr. William H. Smith Auditorium.

The dedication ceremony, organized by Dr. Smith's family, was truly about honoring a remarkable figure in Sudbury's history. Growing up in the South during the Jim Crow era, Dr. Smith undoubtedly endured immense hate and intolerance, yet he chose to live a life defined by friendship, respect, and kindness. It was on full display at the ceremony that his ultimate legacy is one of unity, amity, and our shared humanity. As a beloved figure in the community and our district's first Black principal, his profound contributions to Sudbury Public Schools and the inspiring example he set for our broader community deserve to be celebrated and remembered.

The Smith family put so much care into organizing this event, and it was important that they saw town leadership recognize just how much Dr. Smith's contributions meant to all of us. By attending, and through the thoughtful remarks delivered by Chief Nix, Selectboard Member Carty, LS School Committee Member Carty and Chief Nix helped ensure that Dr. Smith's legacy received the honor, respect, and community presence it so rightly deserved. At a time when things can feel so divisive, showing up to bring people together around shared values is precisely the kind of leadership Sudbury needs most.
