SUDBURY, MA — Eight Sudbury skaters helped Sharper Edge Skating Club reach a program milestone at a national competition in California.
Alina Janigian, Sonia Janowitz, Jenny Karol, Mia Karol, Gracie Lapat, Meaghan Richards, Saesha Shetiya and Emily Tonis won a bronze medal with their team at the National Theatre on Ice competition held in June in Irvine. The result marked the first national medal in the history of the Concord-based skating club.
The Sudbury residents competed alongside five skaters from Framingham, Northborough, Woburn, Burlington and Wayland. The local skaters attend Curtis Middle School, Lincoln-Sudbury Regional High School and The Rivers School.
The team trained together from September through June while members also practiced individually to strengthen their skating skills. Group practices began at 5:45 a.m. Saturdays at Valley Sports Arena in Concord.
Janowitz, Karol and Tonis recently graduated from Lincoln-Sudbury. Janowitz plans to attend Tufts University, Karol plans to attend the University of Massachusetts Amherst and Tonis plans to attend Berklee College of Music. They hope to continue skating in college.
The team has resumed local training and is learning a new program ahead of next year's national competition in Detroit.
