SUDBURY, MA — A regional transportation organization serving Sudbury and five nearby communities is set to return after going dormant during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The CrossTown Connect Transportation Management Association will receive $96,690 to resume work in Sudbury, Acton, Concord, Littleton, Maynard and Stow, the Healey-Driscoll administration announced on Monday. The funding is intended to improve access to jobs, public transportation and other destinations while reducing traffic and reliance on single-occupancy vehicles.
The award is part of $3 million distributed through the Massachusetts Department of Transportation's TMA Grant Program to 14 regional transportation management associations and one statewide group.
CrossTown Connect began as a state-funded collaboration more than a decade ago and received funding to establish a TMA in 2013. Participating municipalities suspended funding for TMA activities during the pandemic, according to a 2022 regional transportation report.
The revived organization plans to establish a new operating structure, hire staff and develop transportation programs with employers, property owners, municipalities and transportation providers, according to the Town of Littleton. Proposed work includes commuter programs, better connections to public transit and efforts to address gaps between transit stops and riders' final destinations.
CrossTown Connect will operate as a nonprofit under the 495 MetroWest Corridor Partnership. Several participating communities will also provide matching funds, although Sudbury's contribution was not specified.
The grant is separate from Sudbury's existing transportation programs. The town currently offers four options, including the Sudbury Connection van, MWRTA Dial-a-Ride, Go Sudbury and Catch Connect, according to the Sudbury Transportation Committee. State and local officials have not announced when the revived TMA will begin offering new programs in Sudbury.
