The Cardinals cut the Giants’ lead to one run after Andrew Sifferelen singled and Nate Nickerson followed with a run-scoring base hit. The Giants got that run back in the bottom half of the inning when Anderson walked and later scored via teammate Mitchell who moved him into scoring position at third base and went into the fourth inning leading 4-2. The Cardinals threatened in the fourth with two out on a walk to Matt Lucey, a base hit by Griffin, and Adam Bradford reaching base safely. But Giants’ Teddy Durant threw to catcher Lyons to nab Lucey at home for a crucial third out. Giants 10, Cubs 2
The Giants combined timely hitting, big bats, solid pitching and great team defense that sparked them to a 10-2 victory over the Cubs, advancing the Giants to the championship game.
The Giants took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning with Sam Anderson, Nicholas Mitchell, Teddy Smith, Jason Lyons, Ippolit Matjucha all reaching base safely. Teddy Durant banged out a run-scoring base hit to round out scoring for the Giants. Thomas Palmer had the lone base hit for the Cubs in the first inning.
In the second, Cubs’ Brendan Meehan (3-for-3, RS) singled, stole second, but got stranded when Giants’ started Teddy Smith struck out the next three consecutive batters to keep the Cubs off the scoreboard.
The Giants’ offense exploded in the bottom of the second. Isaac Tilbor and Benny Smart drew base-on-balls, and Anderson’s base hit loaded the bases with Giants. Mitchell followed with a base hit and scored Tilbor from third. Kyle Smith came to bat and hit a grand slam into the woods behind the centerfield field to give the Giants a 8-0 lead. Teddy Smith reached base safely and Lyons followed with a double before Cubs’ pitchers stopped the scoring threat. The Giants added another run in the fourth in the fourth on a base hit from Kyle Smith and a run-scoring double by Lyons. Andrew Cahill had a base hit in the fourth inning for the Cubs but Giants’ stingy pitching kept any more Cubs’ from reaching base.
The Cubs’ finally tagged Giants’ pitching for two runs in the fifth inning. After Meehan reached base on a base hit, Charlie Murphy reached base safely and Keith Lucier’s single scored Meehan. Jake Mackenzi reached on a fielder’s choice and Jack Bull drew a base-on-balls to load the bases with Cubs. Magnus Magnusson then reached base on an RBI-walk to push across the Cubs’ second run.
In the sixth, Cubs’ Max Solomon reached safely, and Meehan hit his third base hit of the day, but Giants’ closer Lyons proved too tough and struck out the last batter to preserve the victory for the Giants.
Giants starter Teddy Smith threw three shutout innings, and relievers Matjucha and Lyons kept the Cubs’ bats in check. On defense, Kyle Smith made a nice catch in centerfield, while Anderson caught three pop fly balls.
Thomas Palmer shut down the Giants’ offense in the fourth and fifth innings, throwing two strong innings and just 27 pitches, 18 of which were strikes. He allowed just one run on two hits. Palmer struck out six of the eight batters he faced, including striking out the side in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Cardinals 6, Angels 5
Connor Lachman’s walk-off, two-run home run in the bottom of the eighth inning gave the Cardinals a dramatic 6-5 extra-inning victory over the Angels to advance the Cardinals to the championship game.
With two out, and the Angels holding a slim 5-4 lead, Nate Nickerson laced a 3-2 pitch into the right centerfield gap that set the stage for Lachman’s thrilling game-winning home run. In the top of the eighth, Angels’ Joey Caloiero led off with a double, promptly stole third and then stole home, scoring the run that put the Angels ahead.
Key kits from Thomas Griffin and Aidan Cavanaugh pushed one run across for the Cardinals in the second inning. Nickerson’s stingy pitching shut down the Angels’ bats in the second and third innings. But the Angels scored three runs in the top of the fourth, getting solid at-bats from Ryan Cullen, Flynn Townsend, Davis Donley, Brett Parker and Brendan Walsh. The Cardinals answered with their second and third runs on a base hit from Matt Lucey and a double from Thomas Griffin, each who later scored.
Caloiero started the game for the Angels and came out firing by striking out the side in the first inning. Cardinals’ starting pitcher Nate Nickerson countered with two strikeouts in the bottom of that frame. The Cardinals held a slim 4-3 lead going into the fifth inning when Jack Dorsey drew a base on balls with two out, and Nickerson’s double scored Dorsey. But the Angels’ Liam McCarthy came back in the top of the sixth and slammed the first pitch over the left field fence to tie the game at 4-4.
The pitching and defensive combination of Angels’ pitcher Parker, catcher Mulcahey and centerfielder Caloiero, who were each involved in the execution of a double play, kept the sixth and seventh innings scoreless.
