Phillies 12, Cubs 1

Tough Phillies’ pitching and timely offense powered them to a 12-1 victory over the Cubs. Jake Mackenzi (2 1B, RBI), Liam Shaughnessy (1B) Thomas Palmer (1B), and Brendan Meehan (1B, RBI) led the Cubs’ offense. Pitcher Jack Reading needed only three pitches in the fifth inning to retire three consecutive Phillies’ batters. Meehan and Palmer combined for a double play in the first inning as did Reading and Max Solomon in the second. Andrew Cahill made a diving tag of a Phillies’ runner at home plate in the third to thwart a Phillies’ scoring opportunity. Cahill also made a nice catch in right field in the fifth. Shortstop Keith Lucier and third baseman Meehan both made great defensive plays for outs in the fifth inning. Sam Gray (2 1B, 2B, RBI, RS), Jack Gray (1B, 2B, 2 RS, 2 RBIs), Matt Cunningham (3 BB, RS, RBI), Jack Garrity (1B, 2 RBIs, RS), Brian Kelleher (1B, BB, RS), Ethan Sussman (BB, RS), Colby Cataldo (3 BB, 2 RS), Ryan Meal (BB, RS, RBI), and Jack Urdang (2 BB, 2 RS) all contributed to the Phillies’ offense. Wilson Sneath and David Rowe each had three quality at-bats, making good contact and hitting the ball hard. Cunningham, Wilson Sneath and David Rowe each pitched one inning and did not allow any runs. Sam Gray pitched two innings and allowed just one hit. Jack Gray pitched one inning and allowed just one hit and the lone Cubs’ run.

Giants 9, Astros 6

The Giants edged the Astros, 9-6, behind quality pitching from Emmet Klein and Jason Lyons, and timely hitting from Nicholas Mitchell and Lyons.  Klein foiled an Astros’ rally in the sixth inning when the Astros loaded the bases and pushed across a run to cut the Giants’ lead to 9-6. Astros’ James Ensley reached base, George Curry and Jake Titus banged out consecutive base hits and Ensley scored on a bases-loaded walk to Noah Gies. But Klein got the next two outs to end the threat. The Astros got on the board in the first inning when Titus’s base hit scored Ensley, and Titus later scored to give the Astros a 2-0 lead. The Giants bounced back in the bottom of that inning on a double by Nicholas Mitchell who came home with the Giants’ first run on Lyons’ consecutive double. The Astros added three runs in the third on a walk to Jack Carter, a base hit from Justin Lombardi and a two-run single from George Curry. Curry would later score to put the Astros up 5-1. The Giants then scored eight runs with contributing base hits from Mitchell, Kyle Smith, Lyons, and Teddy Durant. Luke Geel reached on a base-on-balls, and Benny Smart, Sam Anderson and Mitchell each added base hits to give the Giants a 9-5 lead. The defensive play of the game for the Giants was turned in by catcher Teddy Durant who made a nice run on foul pop up to slide and grab it, trapping it against his chest for the out. Astros’ Lombardi, Titus and Sean Carney pitched well and had great support on a really nice defensive play from leftfielder Chris Streilein who made a great catch to rob Teddy Durant of a home run and from Curry who turned an unassisted double play.

White Sox 20, Brewers 19

The White Sox scored a total of 15 runs in the fifth and sixth innings to come from behind and edge the Brewers, 20-19 in playoff contention. Matt Joachim reached base three times and scored the tying run in the sixth inning on John Dale’s hit. Dale eventually scored the game-winning run. Haydn Herrema reached base four times, while Liam Huston, Greer Fried, Ryan Richards, Jack Ginand, Will Dale, and John Dale all reached three times. John Dale and David Andrysiak both pitched scoreless innings. The Brewers’ offense was led by Alex Cannon who went 5-for-5 (2B, 3B, 5 RBIs), Dom Garzone (3 hits), Robert Macnamara (2 hits), Jimmy O'Connor (2 hits), Daniel Guzi (2 hits) and Ryan Immerman. Matt Allor, Peter Cannon, Joe Akisik each contributed a base hit. Defensively, Alex Cannon and O'Connor made great plays in the field. Bettenhauser drove in a run with a base hit in the fourth inning. Andrew Brown, Jesse Sun and Adam Howard all reached base with quality at-bats and scored key runs. The pitching of Kevin Ewing (IP, K), Shane George (IP, 2 Ks), Jayden Cormier (2 IP, K) and Andrew Brown (IP) did a nice job for the Pirates in their victory.

Cubs 12, White Sox 11

Thomas Palmer (3 IP, 7 Ks) induced a ground ball for a crucial, game-ending out in the top of the sixth inning with the tying run at third base to preserve the Cubs 12-11 nail-biter of a victory over the tough White Sox. Shortstop Jack Reading fielded the hard-hit ball and fired to Max Solomon at first for the final out. With the Cubs leading 9-8 in the fifth inning, Solomon (2B, HR, 5 RBIs) hit a blistering line drive home run over the left field fence with two runners on to pad the Cubs’ lead to 12-8. Andrew Cahill (2 1B, BB, 3 RS, RBI) and Palmer (1B, 2B, BB, RBI) both scored on Solomon’s home run. But the White Sox came roaring back in the top of the sixth, scoring three runs to cut the Cubs’ lead to 12-11. The Cubs’ hard-hitting offense also received key contributions from Reading (2 1B, RBI, RS), Brendan Meehan (1B, 2B, 2 RBIs, BB), Charlie Murphy (BB), Keith Lucier (RBI), Mackenzi (1B, BB, 2 RS) and Jack Bull (1B, HBP, RS). Liam Shaughnessy and Magnus Magnusson both had solid at-bats.In the fourth inning, with no outs and a White Sox runner in scoring position, Magnusson made a crucial heads-up defensive play by fielding a base hit to left field then quickly throwing the ball back into the infield to hold the runner at third base. Palmer followed with three consecutive strikeouts to shut down that White Sox scoring opportunity. Magnusson made another great defensive play in the fifth, fielding a hard hit ball to him at third base to hold a White Sox runner at second base. The White Sox had a base runner in the fifth but Palmer denied the White Sox yet another scoring opportunity by getting two strikeouts and first baseman Mackenzi (1B, 2 RS) grabbing a pop fly in foul territory for the third out. Mackenzi pitched two solid innings and had one strikeout. Solomon pitched the first inning and had three strikeouts. Defensively for the Cubs, Bull made a nice catch in right field; Mackenzi snagged a hard hit line drive right back to him on the mound in the third; and Cahill and Meehan shared catching duties and both were very strong and solid behind the plate. The Cubs narrowly edged the White Sox, 12-11, to decide the winner of majors playoff pool A.  For the White Sox, Haydn Herrema reached base four times and scored three runs. John Dale reached base three times, and Herrema, Will Dale, and William Stone had key hits in the sixth inning in the White Sox’ comeback bid.  Ryan Richards (2 IP, 3 ER, 3 Ks) and David Andrysiak (1 IP, 0 Rs, 2 Ks) had strong outings against the potent Cubs’ offense.

Angels 3, Indians 1

Flynn Townsend and Ryan Mulcahey hit consecutive doubles to give the Angels a 1-0 lead. Pitchers Joey Caloiero, Brendan Walsh and Brett Parker limited the Indians to one run over seven innings. Mulcahey and Parker were solid defensively behind the plate. Indians’ pitchers Ben Fasciano (3 IP, 4 K), Drew Nobile (3 IP, 4 K) and Nico Andolina kept the Angels’ bats in check for most of the day. Nobile drove in Thomas Hall in the third inning to tie the game.

Giants 10, Pirates 3

Teddy Smith’s two home runs powered the Giants to a 10-3 see-saw battle over the Pirates. After trading runs for most of the game, the Giants’ offense created some fireworks in the top of the sixth inning. With one out, Nicholas Mitchell banged out a base hit, Kyle Smith followed with a double, and Smith launched a rocket over the centerfield fence for a bases-clearing, three-run home run. Lyons and Ippolit Matjucha followed with consecutive walks, Emmett Klein got on base on a fielder’s choice and Teddy Lyons reached base and Lyons scored on the play. Luke Geel followed with his second base hit of the game to drive in Klein. The Giants got on the board first with a lead off triple by Sam Anderson who scored on a later play. The Pirates bounced right, taking a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the first only to watch the Giants tie it up when Jason Lyons drew a base on balls and scored several plays later. In the top of the fourth, the Giants again took the lead on Smith’s first home run the Pirates, undaunted, tied it at 3-3 in the bottom of the fourth. The Giants received great pitching from Kyle Smith (3 IP, 2 ER, 7 Ks) and Teddy Smith (3 IP ER, 4 Ks).  Defensively, Teddy Smith made three nice plays while on the mound to record all three outs in the fifth inning. The Pirates’ great defense and outstanding pitching from James Dillon and Nicholas Bettenhauser kept the game close for the first five innings. After surrendering a lead-off triple, Dillon buckled down and kept the Giants’ bats in check over three innings and recorded five strikeouts. Shortstop James Ewing initiated a heads-up double play in the second inning when he made a difficult catch for one out, then quickly fired to first to nab a Giants’ base runner who couldn’t get back to the base in time. In the third, Adam Howard snared a sharply hit ground ball at first for the second out of the inning, and Jayden Cormier made a nice catch at second for the final out. Bettenhauser (2⅔ IP, 2 Ks) took the mound in the fourth and consistently pounded the strike zone and delivered a quality performance. Jesse Sun and Zac Roth each made great defensive plays in the fifth inning to help cool the Giants’ bats. Dillon and Ewing led the Pirates offense with two base hits apiece.
