My Opening Statement for the One Sudbury Debate

In light of the debate being canceled I thought I would I would share what was to be my opening statement at the debate with the group this evening.

In light of the debate being canceled I thought I would I would share what was to be my opening statement at the debate with the group this evening.  Here it is:

What's become even more clear in the last few days is that this election is really a choice between insiders intent on keeping power concentrated in the hands of a few, and outsiders - including myself and Dan DePompei - trying to open Sudbury up... to encourage broader participation and debate, to restore the transparency, accountability, and just plain fairness required to restore trust and bring the town together.

I have a plan for that. A vote for Chuck Woodard, Len Simon, or Eric Poch is a vote in support of the status quo, a vote to maintain the concentration of power in the hands of those who talk the talk of unity while walking the walk of entitlement and cronyism. This will not bring the town together. Action will.

It's time to spread the power and responsibility to make decisions across multiple constituencies, represent all of Sudbury, not just parts of it. We need to represent the neighborhoods impacted by 40B, not just the 40B builders who impact the neighborhoods. We need to represent the families with kids in the schools. We need to represent the seniors who pay the taxes so the kids can attend such great schools. We need leadership diversity. We need new people at the table representing all of Sudbury. We need to encourage applications from new volunteers who want to serve on our committees. We need to encourage people to think for themselves and empower them with leadership.

This election is a clear choice. Candidates backed by the Sudbury political machine will pay lip service to change while protecting the interests of their benefactors. Dan and I have a plan to increase the diversity of our leadership, restore transparency, broaden volunteerism, and empower people to participate in more of the decisions that effect their children, homes, and lives. Support us on June 25, and you have my commitment that we will make it happen.
