Sudbury Au Pair Gives Back

Sudbury au pair from Cultural Care Au Pair gives back by participating in Aids Walk Boston and 5K run

Cathleen Lachmann, a local au pair in Sudbury, will be participating in the Aids Walk Boston and 5K Run to raise awareness and funds that will make a difference in the fight against HIV/AIDS in our community. Did you know that in the United States someone is infected with HIV every 9 1/2 minutes?  Or that every half hour someone in the U.S. dies due to HIV/AIDS?  These are just a few of the reasons why Cathleen will be joining over 15,000 other people on Sunday, June 5, 2011 for the 26th AIDS Walk Boston and 5K Run.

Cathleen, from Germany, came to Sudbury in 2004 to be an au pair through Cultural Care Au Pair. As an au pair Cathleen provides up to 45 hours of childcare in exchange for a weekly stipend and the opportunity to live with an American family. After 2 years she returned to Germany and started working as a medical assistant. Missing Sudbury and her host family Cathleen decided to be an au pair again and gave up her job and returned to Sudbury in 2009 for another 2 years with the same host family. She started volunteering in September 2010 for the Jimmy Fund Walk and liked it so much that she became actively involved in numerous other charities, the Aids Walk Boston her latest endeavor. Cathleen says, “One of the most important reasons I volunteer is because it keeps me grounded and I appreciate what I have. Not just material things but also health”.

Cultural Care Au Pair has more than 7,000 host families nationwide. Carol Hayes, a Sudbury resident, provides local year round support to Cathleen and other Cultural Care Au Pairs and their families in Sudbury and the metrowest area of Boston.
