Cubs 4, Angels 1
The Cubs’ solid pitching, timely offense and key defensive plays powered them to their fourth consecutive victory with a 4-1 decision over the Angels. Starting pitcher Thomas Palmer faced just 12 batters in three innings, gave up one hit, one run and struck out eight batters. Max Solomon faced eight batters over two innings, struck out four and did not allow a hit. The offense was led by Jack Reading (1B, 2B, RS, RBI); Andrew Cahill (1B, RBI); Solomon (1B, 2B, RS); Palmer (1B, 2B, RS, RBI); and Jake Mackenzi (2B, RBI). Keith Lucier made great contact in his at-bats, and Magnus Magnusson, Liam Shaughnessy and Jack Bull (RS) all reached base safely. Defensively, Cahill made a great unassisted play at first base for an out and made some great stops behind the plate. The defensive gem for the Cubs came in the fifth inning with two outs when Cahill and Solomon combined for a heads-up 2-1 play at home plate, tagging out an Angels’ baserunner for a game-ending third out. The Angels’ lone run was scored by Davis Donley in the second inning. Liam McCarthy (1B) had the only hit for the Angels. Cubs 13, Orioles 8
The Cubs closed out their regular season with their fifth consecutive victory, outlasting the Orioles, 13-7. Magnus Magnusson made his pitching debut for the Cubs and was very effective in his solo inning. He faced six batters, allowed just one run on two hits. With two out and two Orioles’ baserunners, Magnusson induced a ground ball play for the third out to shut down an Orioles’ scoring opportunity. The Cubs’ defense was solid throughout the game. Derek Tang, who was called up from Triple AAA, had a great game in the field and at the plate. Tang had a put out at first base, knocked out two base hits and reached base a third time on a fielder’s choice. Jack Bull made a great catch of a pop fly behind the plate in the first inning and shortstop Jack Reading’s quick glove snagged a hard-hit line drive. Keith Lucier made a great catch of a high fly ball at second base and teammate Brendan Meehan followed by grabbing another hard-hit line drive at shortstop. Liam Shaughnessy, who also made his pitching debut (IP, 1 hit) fielded a ground ball at second base and made a great throw to Thomas Palmer at first; and third baseman Andrew Cahill made a perfect across-the-diamond throw to Palmer at first for an out. Leading the offense for the Cubs was Jack Reading (HR, 3 RBIs, 2 RS), whose three-run home run in the second inning cleared the left-centerfield fence; Cahill (2 1B, 2 RBIs), Shaughnessy (1B), Bull (BB, RBI); Meehan (1B, 2 RS), Lucier (1B, 2 RS), Palmer (1B, 2B, 2 RBIs), Solomon (1B, 2 RBIs, RS), and Mackenzi (1B, RBI, 2 RS). Mackenzi (3 IP, 4 Ks, ER, 1 hit, ER) and Reading (IP, K, 1 hit ER) rounded out the Cubs’ pitching. For the Orioles, Anil Lele (3 RS, 1B, 2 BB), Ben Kateman (2 BB, 2 RS), Miland Lele (1B, 2 BB, 2 RBIs), Jack Fletcher (2 BB, RBI), Lucas Allen (1B, RBI), Alden Young (2 BB, RS), David Marchand (2B, BB, RS), and Ben Ohler (1B, RBI) led the offense. Jamie Sampson-Lizotte hit the ball hard in his at-bats. Starting pitcher Jacob Pentz pitched a scoreless first inning for the Orioles, recorded two strikeouts, and did not allow any hits. The defensive play of the game for the Orioles came in the third inning when pitcher Cubs’ batter Andrew Cahill hit a line drive right back to Orioles’ pitcher Marchand, who saved a run by staying right with the ball and picking it up and firing a perfect throw to first base for a key third out.
