Cubs 11, Phillies 7

The Cubs won their second playoff game, defeating the Phillies, 11-7, in an all-around, well-played game between both teams. All 11 Cubs’ players reached base safely at least once during the game. The Cubs and Phillies traded runs for the first three innings and the Cubs held a slim 8-7 lead going into the fourth inning. Pitcher Thomas Palmer (3 IP, 8 K) threw just 34 pitches to hold the Phillies scoreless for the final three innings of the game.  Palmer also helped himself with a two-run home run in the top of the sixth with a line shot over the centerfield fence. Starter Jake Mackenzi (3 IP, 4Ks) was effective in his outing on the mound pitching out of several jams for key outs. The defensive play of the game was made by leftfielder Liam Shaughnessy who shut down a potential Phillies’ scoring opportunity by fielding a base hit and quickly throwing the ball back to shortstop Andrew Cahill to hold a Phillies’ runner at third base. For the Cubs’ offense, contributions came from everyone: Jack Reading (2 BB, RBI, RS), Cahill (2 RS), Palmer (2B, HR, 2 RBIs), Max Solomon (1B, BB, RS, RBI), Brendan Meehan (2 1B, 2 RS, 2 RBIs), Charlie Murphy (BB, 1B), Keith Lucier (RS), Magnus Magnusson (2 BB, RS), Mackenzi (BB, RBI), Jack Bull (BB, RS), and Shaughnessy (BB, 1B, RBI).  For the Phillies, pitchers Jack Garrity, Wilson Sneath and Sam Gray combined for nine strikeouts. Ethan Sussman reached base safely. Jack Urdang had strong at bats. Defensively, Sneath made a great play at home plate in the second inning, tagging a Cubs’ baserunner for a key third out. Closer Sam Gray made two unassisted plays in the sixth inning – a line drive the he fielded effortlessly and a pop up in front of the pitcher’s mound.

White Sox 13, Brewers 9

Matt Joachim (1-for-2, BB) scored the go-ahead run in the sixth inning as the White Sox staged a late-inning comeback to defeat the Brewers, 13-9. Key contributors to the White Sox offense were John Dale (3-for-4, 3 RS, 3 RBIs) and Jack Ginand (2-for-4, RBI). The Brewers jumped out to an early lead behind the strong pitching of Dom Garzone (3 IP, ER, 3 Ks) and timely hitting. Leading the Brewers’ offense was Robert Macnamara (3-for-4, 2 RS, RBI), Jimmy O'Connor (2-for-2, 3B, 3 RBIs, RS), Garzone (2-for-4, RBI, RS), Daniel Guzi (2-for-3, RBI) and Matt Allor (1-for-2, BB, RBI, RS). The Mets’ pitching and stingy tight defense denied the Giants two scoring opportunities – one in the fifth and again in the top of the sixth when the Giants loaded the bases. Luke Geel (1B) and Teddy Durant (BB) both contributed to the Giants’ offense. Defensively, solid plays were made by catcher Mitchell to pitcher Kyle Smith, and by pitcher Matjucha to catcher Lyons who nabbed Mets’ base runners at home plate on attempted steals
