Orioles 10, Giants 7
Jack Fletcher’s bases-loaded triple broke open a close game and led the Orioles to a 10-7 victory over the Giants in the first game of the Sudbury Little League’s 2013 Majors’ division. Offensively the Orioles were led by Anil Lele (1B, 2B, RBI, RS, SB), David Marchand (1B, 2B, RBI), Alden Young (RBI, 1B), Lucas Allen (BB, RBI, 1B, RS), Jamie Lizotte-Sampson (2 RS), and Jacob Pentz and Ben Kateman who each scored a run. The Orioles received solid pitching from Milind Lele (2 IP, 5 Ks, 1 run, 0 hits), Ben Ohler (1 IP, 2 Ks) and Fletcher (2 IP, 4 Ks). Defensively, Milind Lele and Young each made good catches in centerfield. The Giants’ offense was powered by Kyle Smith (1B, 2 RBIs), hits from Jason Lyons, Sam Anderson, Emmet Klein and Teddy Smith. Ippolit Matjucha was credited with a run batted in on a sacrifice fly. Teddy Durant and Nicholas Mitchell each reached base safely and scored a run. Benny Smart made a nice catch in centerfield.

Cardinals 6, Cubs 2
The Cardinals and Cubs’ pitching staffs dominated the game, but the Cardinals outlasted the Cubs, 6-2, in the season opener for both teams. Cardinals’ Thomas Griffin pitched three strong innings, allowing just two runs on two hits and did not walk a batter. He struck out five. Nate Nickerson came in for middle relief, struck out five, walked two but did not allow any hits. Connor Lachman closed out the game with two strikeouts, two walks and did not give up a hit. Defensively, Andrew Sifferlen made a nice play at first base snagging a high a looping line drive. Matt Lucey made great defensive plays in the first inning. Offensively, Aidan Cavanaugh’s key double in the fourth inning double drove in two runs. Aidan and Charley Cavanaugh each scored twice for four of the six Cardinals’ runs. Nate Nickerson went 2-for-2, drew a base on balls and scored a run. The Cubs pitching duo of Thomas Palmer and Jack Reading kept the game close. Both pitchers combined for nine strikeouts. The Cubs’ offense was lead by Keith Lucier (2-for-2, RBI), Andrew Cahill, Max Solomon, Jake Mackenzi and Charlie Murphy (RBI ).
Brewers 14, White Sox 13
The Brewers defeated the White Sox, 14-13, on Opening Day of the Majors’ Division for Sudbury Little League. The Brewers’ combined timely hitting, solid pitching and fielding to keep the game close. Offensively, Robert Macnamara and Jimmy O’Connor combined for five hits and three doubles for the Brewers. Dom Garzone, Alex Cannon, Ryan Immerman and Jason Mead each provided timely hits. The White Sox offense was led by William Stone who had two hits, including a double and drove in two runs. Matt Becker (3 RBIs) and Greer Fried (2 RBIs) each doubled, and David Andrysiak reached base three times on base on balls. Pitchers Haydn Herrema (2Ks) and William Stone (3Ks) each threw 1-2-3 innings. Defensively, Will Dale made a nice catch of a line drive at shortstop, and leftfielder Liam Huston and Dale combined for a putout at third base. The Brewers’ Joseph Akisik made a nice defensive play to close out a White Sox rally. Cannon threw a perfect strike from the field to catcher Macnamara to cut a runner down at the plate. Brewers received solid pitching from Garzone (1 IP, 2Ks), O'Connor (1 IP, 2Ks), Cannon (2 IP, 4k's) and Matt Allor closed out the game.

Mets 4, Pirates 2
In a battle of pitchers, the Mets outlasted the Pirates, 4-2, in their season-opening game. Andrew Guerra, Nick Emerson and Alex Kelly each scored a run for the Mets in the fourth inning rally. Mets’ pitchers Emerson, Jonah Krasnow and Lucas Lisman combined to strike out 16 batters. Josh Jacobsen stood out defensively at catcher and at first base. For the Pirates, James Dillon pitched three innings and recorded seven strikeouts, Nicholas Bettenhauser pitched two innings and had three strikeouts, and Alex Keilen led the offense with two hits including a double and scored a run. Jesse Sun made a great catch at second base and played solid defense.

Padres 10, Pirates 7
The Padres defeated Pirates 10-7 in a well played game. Sam Winneg (3 IP) and Justin DiPietro (2 IP) tossed five strong innings and JB Clarance closed out the game with one inning of relief. The Padres’ offense was led by Tyler Durkin with a clutch double, and Taylor Bahn, Michael McKinnon and Clarance each had two hits. The Pirates received solid pitching from Kevin Ewing (3 IP, 1 run, 3 Ks) and Alec Keilen (1 ²/³ IP, 0 runs, 2 Ks). Offensively, the Pirates were powered by James Dillon (HR, 3B, 2B, 4 RBIs), Henry Warzecha (2B, 1B, 2 RS), Adam Howard (2 1B, RBI), Jayden Cormier (1B, BB, RS), Nicholas Bettenhauser (1B) and James Ewing (1B). Shane George contributed defensively with a nice stop at second base of a sharply hit ground ball.
Cardinals 21, Astros 4
The Cardinals’ relied on a balanced offense to defeat the Astros, 21-4. Cardinals’ Jack Dorsey went 4-for-5 including a pair of doubles. Nate Nickerson had five hits in five times at bat, including a double. Aidan Cavanaugh went 3-for-5, Matt Lucey had two hits in three times at bat including a double. Andrew Sifferlen was 2-for-4. Charlie Cavanaugh, who pitched three innings and struck out six, helped his team offensively, going 2-for-4 including a double. Jack Dorsey struck out two and allowed just one run over two innings of middle relief. Matt Lucey struck out the side in the sixth inning. George Curry, Sean Carney, James Ensley, and Jack Carter threw quality pitches for the Astros. Carney (2 1Bs, RBI) got the Astros offense going with a lead-off single. Michael Hulen (1B) lined a hard single and played solid defense at catcher. Jake Titus hit a home run, a single and scored two runs. Ensley (1B, RBI, RS) and Nick Carter (2 1Bs, RBI, RS) rounded out the offense.
Mets 13, Giants 12
Drew Tietelbaum’s sixth-inning double scored the winning run as the Mets came from behind twice to edge the Giants, 13-12. The Giant’s offense was led by Ryan Lutz who banged out three hits including a double and drove in four runs. Also contributing offensively were Lucas Lisman (2 1B, 2RBIs), Nick Emerson (2 1B, 2 RBIs), Andrew Guerra (1B, 2RBIs), Tim Duffy (1B, 2 RBIs) and Stuart Lustig (2 RBIs). Alex Kelly, Josh Jacobsen and Brett Siegal each started a Mets’ comeback rally in the second and fourth innings. Pitchers Lutz and Tim Duffy were tough through the first four innings to keep the Mets in the game. Mark Krasnow pitched a scoreless fifth inning and Guerra held off a furious Giants rally in the sixth to secure the victory. The Giants received strong pitching from starter Jason Lyons and relievers Emmet Klein, Teddy Durant and closer Benny Smart. The Giants’ defense was led by Luke Geel and Lyons who were involved in at least five put outs during the game. Giants’ hitting was powered by Kyle Smith (2 1B, 2B, 3B, 2 RBIs), Lyons (2 2B, 3 RBIs), Klein (2B, RBI) and Nicholas Mitchell (2 1B, 2 RBIs). Sam Anderson, Geel, and Durant (RBI) each had a base hit. Ippolit Matjucha and Isaac Tilbor both reached base safely and Smart drove in one run.
Angels 10, Brewers 2
The Angels defeated the Brewers, 10-2 on strong pitching, timely offense and solid defense. Pitcher Joey Calerio scattered five strikeouts over three innings, and Brendan Walsh tossed three inning and recorded four strikeouts. Calerio banged out four hits, Liam McCarthy had three hits and Ryan Cullen, Kyle Hammond and Brett Parker each scored twice. Davis Donley, Henry Stowell and Ryan Mulcahey turned in nice defensive plays in the field. The Brewers were tough opponents as pitcher Dom Garzone threw three solid innings racking up nine strikeouts, and Daniel Guzi and Jason Mead (1K) each turned in solid one-inning performances against a tough Angels’ lineup. Defensively, Peter Cannon and Robert Macnamara made nice catches in the outfield. Alex cannon went 1-for-2 with a triple and a run batted in; Jimmy O'Connor went 2-for-3, and Garzone, Macnamara and Mead each contributed with a base hit.
Indians 19, Cubs 5
The Indians’ offense banged out 15 hits to defeat the Cubs, 19-5. Each Indians’ player had at least one hit, four of which were extra base hits, and each player scored one or more runs. The Cubs’ offense was led by Andrew Cahill (2 2B, 3 RBIs), Jack Reading (1B, RS), Jake Mackenzi (1B, 2B, RBI, RS), Charlie Murphy (1B, 2 RS), and Brendan Meehan (1B, RBI, RS). Defensively, Liam Shaughessey snagged a high pop fly at second base, Cahill and Meehan were solid behind the plate and Mackenzi pitched three innings and struck out six. Jack Bull did a good job manning right field for three innings. In the second inning, Max Solomon and Thomas Palmer combined for a crucial third out on a 4-3 play; and second baseman Magnus Magnusson grabbed a hard-hit ground ball in the top of the fifth and flipped to Solomon at first for a crucial out. The Indians got strong pitching from Ben Fasciano, TJ Hall and Nico Andolina who combined for eight strikeouts while only allowing one walk and four runs. The Indians weresupported by excellent team defense. Parks Marilla led the offense with three hits including two triples and scored twice. Other key offensive contributors were Jack Hankey (3 hits, 2 RS), Drew Nobile (3 hits, 2 RS), David Lifson (2 hits, 2B, 2 RS), Andrew Sanderson (2 hits, 3B). Stephen Kossuth reached base twice and scored.

Cardinals 17, Angels 2
The Cardinals defeated the Angels 17-2 on the strength of strong pitching and timely offense. Nate Nickerson pitched three innings, recorded seven strikeouts and allowed the two Angels’ runs. Connor Lachman following with three scoreless innings and nine strikeouts. Offensively for the Cardinals, Connor Lachman went 3-for-3 with a triple and Andrew Sifferlen went 2-for-4 and also had a triple. Jack Dorsey was 3-for-5 with a double. Aidan Cavanaugh was 2-for-3.
Brewers 16, Giants 6
The Brewers’ offense dominated the game early in a 16-6 victory over the Giants. The Brewers offense was led by Dom Garzone (3 hits), Alex Cannon (2 hits and a long triple), and multiple hits from Peter Cannon, Ryan Immerman and Jimmy O’Connor. Joseph Akisik added a base hit to drive in two runs. Defensive standouts for the Brewers were Peter Cannon with three put outs and Garzone was solid behind the plate. The Brewers received strong pitching from Alex Cannon (6 Ks), O’Connors (3 Ks) and Immerman (2 Ks). Giants’ starter Kyle Smith and relievers Nicholas Mitchell and Ippolit Matjucha were strong on the mound. Giants’ defense was led by Sam Anderson who had three putouts, Emmet Klein and Isaac Tilbor also had nice plays in the field. Giants’ hitting was powered by Anderson (2B), Smith (1B, 2B, 2 RBIs), Mitchell (2 1B, 2 RBIs), Matjucha (1B, RBI) and Jason Lysons (2 RBIs).
Padres 11, Indians 7
The Padres defeated the Indians, 11-7. The Indians received solid pitching from Drew Nobile, David Lifson and Andrew Sanderson who each tossed two innings. TJ Hall, Parks Marilla, Ben Fasciano and Nobile all made excellent defensive plays. Offensively for the Indians, Sanderson (1B, 2B), Nobile (2 1B), David Lifson (2 1B, 2 RBIs) each contributed. Nicol Andolina, Jack Hankey and Stephen Kossuth all contributed on offense and defense. The Padres played great team defense in their victory, turning two doubles plays and received solid pitching from Aidan Rogers, Charlies Desmarais and Griffin Brown who each pitched two innings. Padres’ offense was led by Taylor Bahn and JB Clarance who each had three hits. Will Jarrell chipped in with two base hits and Rogers and Desmarais each score twice.
Cubs 9, Astros 8
Clutch pitching was the key to the Cubs’ victory as they edged a tough Astros team, 9-8. The Cubs held a comfortable 9-1 lead in the bottom of the fifth inning but the Astros sent 11 players to the plate and scored seven runs. With two outs and a 3-2 count, Cubs’ relief pitcher Thomas Palmer threw a fastball for a called third strike to end the game. The Astros were kept off-balance early by Cubs’ starting pitcher Max Solomon (6K) who allowed only two hits and one run in the first three innings. The Cubs scored six of their nine runs on wild pitches in the first four innings. Jack Reading drove in three runs in the top of the fifth with a bases-clearing triple. Palmer (3B, RS), Brendan Meehan (2-3, 2 RS), Andrew Cahill (1B, RS), Solomon (RS), Liam Shaughnessy (RS), Reading and Jake Mackenzi each scored a run. Magnus Magnusson beat out an infield hit to round out the offense for the Cubs. Defensively, Andrew Cahill made a great play at shortstop and Magnusson made a great throw from right field to prevent an Astros’ run. Jake Titus, Justin Lombardi, Jackson Bleakley, and Nick Carter pitched quality innings for the Astros. James Ensley and Lombardi made great plays defensively. Ensley (2B, RBI, 2 RS) led the offense, reaching base safely in four at bats. Jack Carter (2B, RS) also contributed to the late rally.
Mets 8, Phillies 2
In a battle of pitchers, the Mets rallied in the fifth inning to defeat the Phillies, 8-2. Mets’ pitchers Nick Emerson, Drew Teitelbaum and Lucas Lisman combined to allow only one earned run and struck out 10 batters. Lisman (3 RS), Andrew Guerra (2 1B, 3 RBIs) and Teitelbaum (1B, 2 RS) led the offense and Stuart Lustig and Alex Kelly made excellent defensive plays. Phillies’ pitchers Ethan Sussman, Jack Urdang and Matt Cunningham recorded 10 strikeouts. The Phillies’ offense was led by Jack Garrity (3B), Cunningham (2B, RBI) and Sam Gray. Jack Gray turned in an excellent defensive play for the Phillies to stop a Mets’ rally in the fourth inning.
Pirates 11, White Sox 10
Shane George's line-drive base hit scored the winning run in the sixth inning to give the Pirates a dramatic 11-10 victory over the White Sox. Adam Howard’s home run tied the game in the sixth inning and set the stage for George’s game-winning hit. Johnny Oblak was the defensive star for the Pirates with several nice grabs at second base and five put outs. Oblak also had a base hit. Haydn Herrema led the offense for the White Sox, going 4-for-4 with a double and drove in two runs. Jack Ginand reached base three times on base-on-balls, played very well behind the plate, and pitched the White Sox out of a jam in the third inning. Will Dale (2 RBIs) pitched a solid fifth inning, helped by a diving catch in right field by John Dale (1 RBI).
