The work centers on two culverts beneath Old Sudbury Road, also known as Route 27. The town plans to replace both structures and rebuild the affected sections of pavement, according to an April bid notice.
Town inspections found that both culverts were in serious need of repair. Parts of the smaller culvert had deteriorated completely, raising concerns that material supporting the road could wash away, according to a 2021 engineering analysis. That culvert carries runoff from the road and a nearby wooded area toward Pantry Brook.
The second culvert, a corrugated metal pipe about 3 feet wide, also showed severe deterioration. Its stone walls were failing as well. The culvert helps move water between wetlands on either side of the road toward the Sudbury River.
Work Also Scheduled For Sherman's Bridge
This comes as work is planned on Sherman’s Bridge, which carries Sherman’s Bridge Road over the Sudbury River near Lincoln Road and connects Sudbury and Wayland.
