"Cross of Snow" Virtual Author’s Discussion & Dinner

Join The Wayside Inn Foundation (TWIF) and author Nicholas A. Basbanes on Tuesday evening, August 11th at 7:00 pm for virtual discussion presented live online about Basbane’s newly released literary biography, Cross of Snow: A Life of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. The talk will be accompanied by a dinner apropos of the era prepared by Longfellow’s Wayside Inn that attendees can pick up and take home to eat while watching the program. Copies of signed hardcover books may also be purchased and picked up with dinner.

Mr. Basbanes is the author of ten critically acclaimed works of cultural history, with a particular emphasis on various aspects of books and book culture. He spent more than twelve years researching material for Cross of Snow, including items in the collections at The Wayside Inn and the Longfellow House-Washington’s Headquarters National Historic Site. Longfellow’s Tales of a Wayside Inn is often credited with rejuvenating what was then known as Howe’s Tavern and later renamed in honor of the work. The talk will include references to why Longfellow chose The Inn for the location of Tales.

Prior to the event a link to the virtual talk will be e-mailed to participants. Dinners will be available for pick-up on the day of the event between 5:00-6:00 pm and will include a chilled Vichyssoise, chicken cordon blue, duchess potatoes, haricots verts, and a slice of apple pie for dessert. Should anyone have dietary restrictions or a preference for a vegetarian option, please note this when making reservations and the Inn can accommodate. The cost of the talk is $10 per household, the dinner is $25 per person, and copies of the signed book are $30. For those who cannot attend, we are exploring recording this program to make it available at a later date for a reduced fee. Registrants who live out of the area of the Inn can still purchase a copy of the book with an additional charge for shipping and handling. This program is supported, in part, by Main Street Bank.
