Fall Rummage Sale

Memorial Congregational Church holds its annual Rummage Sale on Thursday October 7 and Friday October 8.  The annual sale draws buyers from not only Sudbury, but also the surrounding towns of Wayland, Lincoln, Concord, Maynard, Stow, Hudson, Marlborough and Framingham.     The sale opens at 6:00 PM Thursday, closing at 9:00 PM.   On Friday, the sale operates from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM.

Every year in October, the rummage sale racks and tables fill the church parlor with excellent used clothing for men, women and children at bargain basement prices. Also available are shoes, hats, pocketbooks, and linens.  All items are gently used or brand new, and are donated by Sudbury residents.  MCC's welcoming community and atmosphere make it the perfect spot for leisurely rummaging.

MCC parishioner Betty Drum who has led the operation of the sale since 1994, reports raising over $28,000 for the church programs during that time.  MCC Women's Fellowship members staff the aisles and the cash register, and may even, on occasion, negotiate prices with serious buyers.

Mrs. Drum, who also directs the MCC-resident Sudbury Bell Ringers, is very proud of the fund-raising records over the years, and the crowds of people who show up: "… we reach buyers from many surrounding communities.  In the past we had people ask to be notified by mail.  We can't use the mail for notifications any more, but rely on our local newspapers to get the message out."

She continues: "There's always a big crowd at the opening on Thursday evenings.   Arrive early to find what you want!"   Thursday shoppers will also be treated to the weekly evening rehearsal of the MCC Senior Choir, directed by Cathy Meyer.

What happens to the clothing that isn't sold?  Mrs. Drum again: "All the left over clothing is given to charity and welcomed by them. Recently we have sent clothes into Rosie's Place in Boston with the regular MCC crew that takes and serves meals there."

What if you miss this sale?  MCC runs two other major fund-raising fairs during the year.   The Twelve Shoppes of Christmas on Saturday November 13 is the next opportunity, and in the Spring Betty and her loyal band of Rummage Sale staff do it again every spring.
