Friend’s of Assabet River National Wildlife Refuge presents a talk on the unique features of fire-dependent forests by Tim Simmons.
Mr. Simmons is a restoration ecologist with Massachusetts Natural Heritage and Endangered Species Program. He will talk about his experiences managing forests for this unique habitat.
Fire-dependent forests provide habitat for some rare wildlife species including Barren's buck moth, whip-poor-wills, and New England cottontails. These unique pitch pine-scrub oak forests rely on fire to regenerate and can be found in the Desert Natural Area in Marlborough and Sudbury.
