Memorial Congregational Church closes concert season with A Cabaret Evening
Memorial Congregational Church will hold its final concert of the 2010-2011 season, an evening of light musical entertainment and refreshments on Friday, June 17, at 7:00 PM. Extending the regular four-concert season, the Cabaret Evening features MCC members and friends in folk, rock, gospel, and other musical styles while the audience relaxes in a coffee house atmosphere, enjoying light snacks and beverages.
The concert concludes the 2010-2011 season which began and ended with focus on two great modern French composers, Francis Poulenc, and Gabriel Faure, and included the 37th Messiah Sing in December and the 28th Candlelight Concert in March. Listeners attended MCC concerts this season in record numbers this year, totaling over five hundred for the four regular events.

Although it’s primarily a vocal evening, the lineup of performers offers the variety often associated with the regular Candlelight Concert, but in the informal setting of Ames Hall setup as a coffee house. The MCC Gospel Choir, directed Sudbury resident and Hudson music educator Jeannette McLellan, will perform tunes as diverse as Leonard Cohen’s ‘Hallelujah’, ‘Buttercup’ by The Foundations, the beautiful ‘Ashokan Farewell’ by Jay Ungar, written for the Ken Burns movie ‘The Civil War’, ‘Fields of Gold’ by Sting, and the traditional spiritual ‘Amazing Grace’.
Several parent-daughter duets are featured, including Sudbury resident Steve Kurtz with his daughter Emily, class of 2011 graduate at LSRHS, Sudbury residents Mary and Jen Bernier, and Rev. Tom O’Brien and first-grade daughter Charlotte. Other duets include MCC members Becky Hall and Beth Whitlock, and Class of 2011 graduates Jen Bernier (LSRHS) and Olivia Caputo (Ashland High School), singing ‘For Good’ from the show Wicked’, and Stevie Nicks’ ‘Landslide’. Caputo will also sing the Sara Bareilles tune ‘Gravity’. The most unusual offering of the evening is the MCC Women’s Vocal Nonet – including MCC members Lynn Connor, Melinda Connor, Jen Bernier, Mary Bernier, Maggie Brewer, Heidi Unger-Dowd, Jeannette McLellan, all of Sudbury, Stow resident Becky Hall and Olivia Caputo, -- in the a cappella arrangement of George Harrison’s ‘Here Comes the Sun’.
