Stories of Lives Transformed - YouthBuild USA

Dorothy Stoneman, Founder and CEO of YouthBuild USA, will speak at Congregation Beth El in Sudbury on Sunday April 29 at 5:00. Her talk, Stories of Lives Transformed, will tell the stories of how students and graduates of YouthBuild are changing their lives and building affordable housing in Massachusetts. Local YouthBuild students and graduates will join Dorothy at Congregation Beth El to share their stories firsthand.

In YouthBuild programs, low-income young people aged 16-24 who lack a high school diploma and/or are unemployed enroll full-time for 6-24 months. They divide their time between working toward their GEDs or high school diplomas in small individualized classrooms in a YouthBuild alternative school, and learning construction skills through building affordable housing for homeless and low-income people in their neighborhoods under skilled supervision. Caring adult staff emphasize personal responsibility, mutual support, and leadership development. YouthBuild graduates go on to college or jobs and many earn AmeriCorps education awards for their service in the community. Many alumni continue to participate as community leaders.

Since 1994, more than 110,000 YouthBuild students have produced over 21,000 units of low-income housing in America's poorest communities.
