Former Miss Sudbury Nominated for Grammy Award

Linda Chorney's 'Emotional Jukebox' up for Best Americana Album.

(EDITOR'S NOTE: The following is a press release from Canter Communications.)

Former Sudbury resident Linda Chorney, an independent singer/songwriter, shakes up the 54th annual Grammy Awards with her dark horse nomination as Best Americana Album for her sixth release, “Emotional Jukebox.”

Chorney, a Red Sox fanatic, was born and raised in Massachusetts. On her fourth album, Chorney is wearing a David Ortiz shirt and standing on the dugout at Fenway. She also features a “Things to Do” checklist on her Grammy nominated album, which includes an unchecked box for singing the National Anthem at Fenway.

Chorney, a former Miss Sudbury and prom queen of the class of ‘78, has performed throughout the Boston area with her band, which was made up primarily of Berklee students, at many venues including Channel, Molly’s, T.T. Bears, and Copperfield’s. In 1991, she also performed at the Hatch Shell for Nelson Mandela. The Boston Globe showed a photo of her with Paul Simon backstage comparing calluses on their fingertips.

Music mogul Fred Taylor was Chorney’s first manager in the late 1980s. He is a former owner of Paul’s Mall and currently runs Scullers Jazz Club in Boston. The two pursued the dream of recording at Soundtrack Studios in Boston and taking Chorney’s music to the major labels in New York and L.A., but never got the nod.

Twenty years later, on her own, she did. A Grammy nod! Chorney's fellow nominees are all mega stars: Emmylou Harris, Levon Helm, Lucinda Williams and Ry Cooder. Past Nominees in this newer category include household names like Bob Dylan, Robert Plant, and Willie Nelson.

Chorney has made history by being the first self-produced, self-label, independent-as-they-come artist to get a nomination in this prestigious category. As an unknown, Chorney has adopted her new nickname “Who the F%^& is Linda Chorney” and proudly sells T-shirts with the phrase.

She will attend the 54th Grammy Awards on Feb. 12.
