Hoop Havens

Looking for a place to play outdoor basketball? Check these courts out.

With the end of summer in sight, and the nasty heat and humidity finally waning, more comfortable conditions will start to settle in, allowing people to enjoy outdoor activities again.

And one of those activities is outdoor basketball. Just about every town in Metrowest has courts at local schools and parks, but not all are in prime condition.

I decided to drive around Sudbury recently, trying to find a hidden gem or two for you outdoor basketball enthusiasts. And this is what I found.

NOT THE BEST, BUT WORTH A SHOT

Gen. John Nixon Elementary School, 472 Concord Road: This six-rimmed court is tucked behind the elementary school and offers plenty of parking. The playing surface is crack-free, but that's about all that is good here. Two of the rims are missing nets and three have torn nets. There are no benches to rest on in between games and three of the four sides are open, allow loose balls to bounce away.

Peter Noyes Elementary School, 280 Old Sudbury Road: Another decent court tucked away from the main road, this four-rimmed playing surface is a good option for both adults and younger children. Two of the rims are regulation height, while the other two stand about 8-feet. The nets on the regulation rims are in good condition. The playing surface does show some cracks, and three of the playing sides are open (a small fence guards the fourth side). The court is bench-free, and there is a water bubbler near the court, but it does not work.

A SLAM DUNK

Israel Loring Elementary School, 80 Woodside Road: This is what every outdoor court should be like. This regulation-sized, single court in back of the school is completely fenced in. You'd have to kick the basketball over the fence for it to get loose. Both rims are in good shape, and the playing surface is crack-free and is chalked off. There are also four benches to rest on.

Ephraim Curtis Middle School, 22 Pratts Mill Road: Another great place to play. This court is also completely fenced in, except for two small entrances at mid-court. Both rims are in good shape, but one has a net that needs replacing. The playing surface is in good shape, but the chalk lines have faded a bit.
