Updated: I-95 School Bus Rollover From Sudbury Middle School Program

State police said the incident happened on I-95 southbound.

SUDBURY, MA – Update: 7 p.m.: At 12:47 p.m. on Wednesday, Massachusetts State Police received numerous calls reporting a crash between a school bus and a pickup truck, causing the bus to roll over the guardrail on the southbound side of Route 95 in Waltham.

Responding troopers and Waltham firefighters found the bus on its side off the right side of the road, up against a stone ledge. The driver, adult monitor, and 22 students were out of the bus upon troopers’ arrival on-scene, said Mass. State Police.

Ten students reported minor injuries and were transported by ambulances to area hospitals. The other 12 students were also transported for precautionary evaluations. The youths were taken to Boston Children’s Hospital, Saint Elizabeth’s Hospital, and Newton-Wellesley Hospital. The bus driver and monitor were also being evaluated for precautionary reasons only at a hospital.

According to officials, the bus was traveling southbound, south of the exit for Route 20 (Exit 26), when a 2016 Chevrolet Silverado, also being operated southbound, collided with the bus. The impact caused the bus to veer to the right and roll over the guardrail onto an embankment leading to a stone ledge.

The students are in grades 6-8 at Ephraim Curtis Middle School in Sudbury as part of the Metco program, and were headed back to Boston. The bus is a Thomas Built Saf-T-Liner.

The driver of the bus is a 54-year-old man from Everett. The monitor is a 54-year-old Mattapan man.
The driver of the Silverado is a 29-year-old Belmont man.

At this point in the investigation, no charges have yet been filed.

All students had been examined, and treated and released from the hospital, or were expected to be released, by late this afternoon. All had been reunited with their parents. State Police sent personnel to each hospital to help communicate the situation with parents and school officials.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation by Troop H of the Massachusetts State Police, with assistance from the State Police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Unit. Troopers from Troop A also provided assistance at the scene, along with the Waltham Fire Department.

The bus has been pulled upright and removed from the scene.

Update, 5 p.m.: Superintendent of Sudbury Public Schools Anne Wilson released a statement, confirming that a school bus operated by First Student Inc. crashed on I-95 southbound that carried 22 students from the Ephraim Curtis Middle School. The students are part of the Metco Program, and were on their way home to Boston.

"Thankfully, no serious injuries were reported," she wrote in an email. "However, all 22 students were taken to three area hospitals out of an abundance of caution, and we applaud the efforts of police, firefighters, and rescuers. Sudbury Public Schools has sent faculty, staff, and administrators to the three area hospitals to assist our students and work directly with affected families. We will provide whatever resources are needed by our students and families.We are so grateful that it appears none of our students were seriously injured."

Schools will operate on a normal schedule on Thursday, and a replacement bus will be in service to transport the students to and from school. The crash is under investigation by the Massachusetts State Police, and Sudbury schools is in. regular contact.

"We ask that the privacy of our students be respected," she added. "No members of the media are allowed on school grounds."

Update, 3:55 p.m.: The eight students who were transported to Boston Children's Hospital are expected to be released soon. Twelve students were taken to the hospital for precautionary measures. All injuries were minor, reports WCVB-TV. The bus was carrying 22 students, a teacher's aid, and the driver. The children on the bus attend the METCO program from Sudbury, and were headed home on an early release day.

Original post: A bus carrying 22 students from Curtis Middle School in Sudbury rolled over a guardrail on I-95 southbound in Waltham Monday afternoon.

The crash happened on I-95 southbound, south of Route 20 around 12:45 p.m., state police said. Ten of the children were transported to the hospital with minor injuries; the remaining 12 will be evaluated at the hospital as a precaution, according to police.

All of the children are off the bus, and no significant injuries were reported.

A pickup truck was also involved in the crash, according to police. Crews are at the scene, and the incident is being investigated.

The right two lanes of the roadway are closed, police said.
