Lincoln-Sudbury Swim Teams Sweep Hopkinton

Several Warriors earn state-qualifying times.

The Lincoln-Sudbury swim and dive teams competed against Hopkinton at a spectator-filled Atkinson Pool on Dec. 27. The girls won 108-76 and the boys continued their winning swims with a 105-74 victory.

Four L-S girls teams competed in the 200-yard medley relay. The team of Catherine MacKeen (backstroke), Ansley Baker (breaststroke) Megan Griffin (butterfly) and Leah McCabe (freestyle) came in first with a winning time of 1:57.10. The team of Michelle Iskandar (backstroke), Caroline Hutlin (breaststroke), Kim Yang (butterfly) and Katie Smith (freestyle) came in third with a sectional qualifying time of 2:08.96. The team of Emily Huang (backstroke), Mary Jo Samojla (breaststroke), Shay Darcey (butterfly) and Nathalie Cabrera (freestyle) finished fourth and had a sectional qualifying time of 2:14.55.

Alicia Perry was successful in winning the 200 freestyle with a state qualifying time of 2:06.62. Kathryn Thomas placed third.

Jenny Genovese placed second in the 200 individual medley, Emily Huang placed third while Michelle Iskandar a close fourth.

Megan Griffin sprinted her way to a first-place finish in the 50 free with a state qualifying time of 25.97. In second was Baker with a sectional qualifying time of 27.39, and third was McCabe with the time of 27.54.

Yang placed first the diving competition. Emma Jarczyk and Clara Shealy placed second and fourth, respectively.

The 100 butterfly was a solid race as MacKeen took first place with a a sectional qualifying time time of 1:04.92. Shay Darcey placed fourth and Caroline Hutlin was fifth.

The 100 freestyle was won by Griffin with a state qualifying time of 58.09. Next in was McCabe while Baker placed fifth.

Perry, Genovese and Thomas did the distance swimming for the Warriors in the 500 freestyle and finished first, second and fourth, respectively. Perry earned a spot in the state meet with a state qualifying time of 5:44.06.

L-S took first, second and fourth in 200 yard freestyle relay. First in was Baker, McCabe, Perry and Genovese. Coming in second was Huang, Iskandar, Darvey and Smith. Fourth place went to the team of Danielle Gyory, Morgan Nash, Samie Alarie, and Nathalie Cabrera.

Hopkinton's Carly Adams won the 100 backstroke and second place went to MacKeen. Caoline Hutlin placed second in the 100 breast, Mary Jo Samojla placed third and Ruiji Gao placed fifth.

The 400 relay was a decisive win by the team of Genovese, Griffin, Perry and MacKeen, easily surpassing the state qualifying time standard.

The boys team began the meet with a contest in the 200 medley relay. L-S prevailed by 0.36 seconds. Tom Edwards led the team in the backstroke, followed by Sam Mackie (breaststroke), Bryan Johnson (butterfly) and anchor Joe Merullo (freestyle), with the winning and state qualifying time of 1:44.41.

Johnson swam strong and placed second in the 200 freestyle with a state qualifying time of 1:52:04. Dillon Brown placed third and Nate Thomas placed fifith.  

In the 200 yard individual medley, L-S placed second, fourth and fifth by Taylor Brown, Ryan Kenney and Jake Hogan, respectively. Edwards won the 50 freestyle with a state qualifying time of 23.83. Merullo placed third and Ricky Billig placed fifith.

The L-S divers earned points for the team as Tom Novick placed first, Kevin Henderson third and Scott Henderson fifith.

Johnson kicked his way to victory in the 100 butterfly, winning by 0.19 seconds with a state qualifying time of 57.59. Billig and Kenney placed third and fourth, respectively.

Chris Wilkins (5:26.56) cruised the 500 freestyle with a first-place finish, followed by Thomas (5:37.70) and Matt Shelley (5:46.46). The 200-yard relay team of Merullo, Hogan, Brown and Wilkins placed second, with the team of Kenney, Andrei Rikitin, Tom Novick and Ricky Billig close behind.

Edwards backed his way through the water winning the 100 backstroke with a state qualifying time of 57.9. Dylan Brown placed third and Chris Knightly was fifth.

Mackiewon the 100 breaststroke. Coming in third and fourth were Wilkins and Merullo, respectively.

"With the season well under way, the swimmers and divers are training and competing tired and also getting over illnesses," said coach Ann Boudrot. "Overall they are doing very well."

The undefeated boys team will travel to Boston Latin on Jan. 5. On Jan 10, they will host and compete against defending Division 1 state champion St. John's Prep.

The girls and boys will both compete against Weston on Jan. 12 at Weston.
