Meet Lincoln-Sudbury's New Baseball Coach

The high school's English teacher is now its varsity baseball coach. Welcome Matt Wentworth.

He can remind you not to end a sentence with a proposition, but also craft a starting lineup and help a shortstop improve his throw to first. Welcome Matt Wentworth, who’s the new head baseball coach at Lincoln-Sudbury High School.

Wentworth has taught English at L-S High for seven years, “during which time he’s become an important part of the L-S community,” said Peter Elenbaas, L-S’s athletics and activities director.

“I’ve always loved baseball and I love working at Lincoln-Sudbury,” said Wentworth. “So this was, in a lot of ways, a perfect marriage.”

For the past two seasons, Wentworth has been the JV baseball coach at Concord-Carlisle High School, and also coached alpine skiing and sub-varsity soccer for six years at L-S. He attended Union College, where he played varsity baseball and soccer. Before attending Union, he played baseball at North Andover High School.

Wentworth says he’s already held meetings with Elenbaas to start setting up a non-league schedule, and has contacted the parents who help organize L-S baseball behind the scenes, as well as work with members of Sudbury youth baseball to set up programs that connect L-S players to its feeder teams.

“When I applied, I knew that coaching L-S baseball wasn’t just going to be a spring position,” he said. “Even though I’m only working with my athletes from the end of March until June, there are so many other things that go into coaching a successful program.

“Unfortunately, because I’ve been coaching at a different school for the past two years,” said Wentworth, “I haven’t been able to watch any L-S baseball games, so I don’t have a lot of specifics about individual players. I’ve been told positive things about pretty much every returning varsity player, which is a really exciting situation to be in. I’ve also spoken with a few former players who reached out to me in the last week or so (players I’d taught and have good relationships with). They go on and on about the amount of talent on this team. Knowing the caliber of player L-S is known for turning out and how motivated I know these guys are. I can’t foresee anything but incredible success.”

Since L-S’s game schedule is a “who’s who of Massachusetts baseball,” Wentworth said every game feels like it’s the “team to beat.” L-S’s schedule includes games against Acton-Boxborough, Westford, Bridgewater-Raynham, St. John’s Prep and Boston College High.
