Patch Picks: Unique Classes and Workshops for Kids

Afterschool and extracurricular classes don't have to be typical.


When/Where: Six-week sessions will run Tuesdays, May 8-June 12 and Thursdays, May 10-June 14. Various workshops are offered during each section. Courses are taught at The Performing Arts Connection, 31 Union Ave., Sudbury.
The Buzz: These inexpensive, six-week courses offer kids an opportunity to try various kinds of dance, including hip-hop, ballet, jazz, tap and others, or to give acting a try during musical theater or intro to drama classes.
Age Group: 5-year-olds through high school students (see each class for age specifics).
Price: $60-$90

Crime Scene Investigation Workshop
When/Where: May 12 from 9:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. at Peace Lutheran Church, 107 Concord Road, Wayland.
Age group: Students in grades 5 through 7.
The Buzz: This May 12 workshop is a first for Wayland and the western suburbs, but the workshop itself is tried and true. Jr. Tech of Cape Cod has been offering its STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) education CSI workshop for years, but this is a first in this area. Students will take part in lab sections including fingerprint and hair analysis, DNA testing, fabric and dry-material testing, and more.

After-School Explorers
When/Where: Four-week session takes place May 22, May 29, June 5 and  June 12 from 2:20 p.m.-5 p.m. at Land Sake Farm, 90 Wellesley Street, Weston.
The Buzz: During this four-week course, students get involved in the outside world. These courses take place in both the fall and spring. The spring program  allows students to participate in sowing seeds in the garden and helping with new baby livestock.
Age Group: Students in grades 4 and 5.
Price: $150

First-Play Sports Clinics
When/Where: Dates and locations are dependent on the sport. Nara Park,  Elm Street Tennis Courts and Robbins Mill Recreation Area, all in Acton, are the locations.
The Buzz: Whether it's T-ball, tennis or flag football, these First-Play Sports Clinics have your kids covered. Coaches work with kids to build "valuable attitudes toward exercise, sharing, teamwork and pride in accomplishment."
Age Groups: Ages 3-13 (see each class for age specifics).
Price: $83-$125
