Sudbury has more than 950 hydrants, and as are many other towns and cities, officials - and concerned citizens - are reminding folks, “shovel your hydrants!” It could save a life.

SMILE Mass., a a nonprofit that provides handicap accessible vacation rentals for families with special needs children, is sponsoring a specific initiative in Sudbury. Many of the Sudbury hydrants have marker flags indicating where the hydrant is. SMILE is challenging kids (with adult supervision) to adopt a hydrant and dig it out.

To participate, children (and families) need only pick a hydrant, shovel it out, and commit to it for the winter. SMILE asks that the photos of the shoveled hydrants be sent to info@smilemass.org.
