SPS Preparing for Incoming Kindergartners

About 236 students enrolled for kindergarten as of Wednesday night.

Sudbury Public Schools is gearing up to usher in the next group of kindergartners for the upcoming school year.

Superintendent Dr. Anne Wilson and Early Childhood Director Linda Karpeichik presented an update of kindergarten registration at Wednesday night's SPS meeting.

Wilson said 236 students were registered as of Wednesday night, but asserted that the numbers fluctuate daily.

"Enrollment is a wild card for us," Karpeichik said, who added there are 11 full day and two half day kindergarten classes scheduled for the 2012-2013 school year.

Among top priorities for registration are to kindergartners in their home districts and to accommodate full- and half-day requests, Wilson said.

There are currently eight students on the waiting list for full-day classes, which Wilson and Karpeichik hope to sort out in the next week or so.

Committee Chairman Jeffery Beeler commented on how much the program has grown since its formation in 2006.

"I think it's remarkable how far this program has come in six years," he said.

Also at the meeting, EDCO Collaborative Executive Director Dorsey Yearly presented information about new legislation that would affect its operations.

The Collaborative is an organization school districts in the area join voluntarily in order to enhance education through providing various services, according to its website.

Yearly's presentation dealt with the restructuring of the Collaborative from two entities — one a private nonprofit and the other public — into one per legislative requirements.

The SPS Committee, along the other participating districts, will have to vote to dissolve the private agency by May 10.

The school system is a member of three collaboratives, according to Wilson.
