Stuck In The Rough

The Warriors begin their season 0-2 after a loss to Weston.

After a losing a close match to Acton-Boxborough to open the season Tuesday, the Lincoln-Sudbury Warriors teed off Wednesday in pursuit of their first win of the season, but were denied by Weston, 94-102.

The Warriors faced off against the Trojans on the front nine at Nashawtuc Country Club in Concord on a day that once again provided unfavorable winds.

"The wind today was more in your face. I didn't really know how much club to take. I kind of took too much club sometimes and too little other times," said senior Peter Kraemer.

The Warriors started off the course strong but got in a rut on the latter half, especially on holes six and seven.

"I hit a sprinkler head on six, went in the hazard and made double [bogey]," said Kraemer.

Hole seven presented a water hazard, which both Jake Earle and Weston's Nicky Buenaventura fell victim to. Even for those who avoided the water, it was still a difficult hole.

"I got blocked out on my tee shot and I didn't have an approach shot in [on hole seven]," said Weston's Joey Pasquale.

While the Warriors started out strong and lost it toward the end, the Trojans were able to remain rather consistent throughout the course with all aspects of their game, especially putting.

"The round could have been better, but our putting was definitely the best thing we had going," said Buenaventura.

"I just try to hit every fairway, and club up and swing easy. It was working for the first six holes being 1-under and then I blew up," said Kraemer.

While 0-2 is not how the Warriors planned on starting their season, they have a long season ahead of them to make up lost ground. They certainly have the right attitude about it, though, as they are already addressing some of their issues early, which they'll work on from now until their next match.

"[I'm going to work on] not giving up. Can't make a double [bogey] and let it ruin the whole round," said Kraemer.

"We did better [as a team] than we did yesterday but I don't think Peter or I played to our potential," said Earle.

While they'd much rather be 2-0 than 0-2, they're still having fun playing the game.

"Pete and I are good friends. We have a lot of fun out there. When we get over the ball, it's all business, but it doesn't mean we can't have fun," said Earle.

The Warriors' next match is against Wayland on Sept. 13. Tee time is 3:45 p.m. at Wayland Country Club.
