Sudbury C Red Topples Undefeated, Takes Silver in Bay State Trophy Weekend

Lynnfield went into the playoffs 6-0, but were toppled by Sudbury, which heads to the semi-finals.

SUDBURY, MA—Sudbury Bay State baseball's C Red team broke out in a big way in the third inning on Saturday on its way to a 12-2 victory in the semi-finals over top ranked and undefeated (6-0) Lynnfield.

Matthew Mahoney pitched a gem, going five innings strong, then handing it over to closer Nate “Sandman” Venis, as he slammed the door shut in the sixth. Tommy Kinzfogl, Matthew Stagno and Noah Shapiro demonstrated shut-down outfield play, keeping innings short and clean. Jake Haarde led the hitting assault with every at-bat, while Owen Greene and Cooper Tarantino powered the offense, driving in five runs between them, catapulting Sudbury into the finals.

The championship game on Sunday was a defensive battle; Peter Rossi with a great catch in deep right field, and Jojo Tibbetts and Andrew Kushinsky turning a beautiful 4-6-3 double play to finish the 3rd inning, keeping things even deep into the game. Ryan Burke and Tarantino both pitched beautifully on Sunday, while North Andover’s pitchers did just the same. In the end, North Andover took the Gold, while Sudbury took silver.

Sudbury C Red returns to tournament play on Saturday, July 23.
