Sudbury Continues Fees For Public Electric Vehicle Chargers

SUDBURY, MA — Electric vehicle drivers using Sudbury's public charging stations should continue paying fees, the town said in an announcement published Thursday.

The town operates 11 Level Two chargers with 22 ports at four municipal properties. The rate is 42 cents per kilowatt-hour, with payments made through the Red E Charge app; the price took effect in July 2025.

Sudbury said the fee helps offset the cost of purchasing, installing, operating and maintaining the chargers. Officials set the rate after reviewing prices in nearby Greater Boston and MetroWest communities and plan to review it periodically.

Drivers receive a 30-minute grace period after their vehicles are fully charged. After that period, the town charges an idle fee of $3 per hour in full-hour increments to encourage drivers to make charging spaces available to others.

Here's where the chargers are located:

• Fairbank Community Center, 40 Fairbank Road: four chargers and eight ports
• Department of Public Works, 275 Old Lancaster Road: two chargers and four ports
• Police Department, 75 Hudson Road: one charger and two ports
• Goodnow Library, 21 Concord Road: four chargers and eight ports

Sudbury established an Electric Vehicle Charging Revolving Fund at the 2025 Town Meeting. Revenue from the charging stations is reserved for continued investment in the program’s reliability and operation, according to the town.
