Sudbury Residents Can Save 60% On Electric Bills: Town

Eversource is raising electric rates in January, but the town's is offering a way cheaper rate through the aggregation program.

SUDBURY, MA — There's a big electric rate increase coming on Jan. 1, but Sudbury residents don't have to pay it.

Starting in January, the Eversource electricity supply rate will increase to 25 cents per kilowatt-hour, about 43 percent higher than current rates. But the town's municipal aggregation program will remain locked in at a rate of 10 cents per kilowatt-hour through at least December 2023.

Even Sudbury's pricier "green" plan, which buys electricity from 100 percent renewable sources, will remain much lower than Eversource at 13.8 cents per kilowatt-hour.

Electric bills feature two different rates: one for supply, which pays for the plant that generates electricity; and one for delivery, which generally pays for getting electricity from the plant to your home.

Although utilities like Eversource and National Grid have near total control over electricity delivery, many communities in Massachusetts offer municipal aggregation programs with cheaper supply rates. Some cities and towns in Massachusetts operate their own electric utilities, and aren't subject to private utility increases.
