Greetings from the SUMC Youth!
As summer winds down, we say “See you soon!” to our graduates as they head off to their next chapters and we say “Welcome!” to our new sixth grade youth. August is an exciting time of the year because the new middle school students join the ranks of the youth group. Our first event with the new sixth graders is our annual end-of-summer pool party, on August 25, which is for youth and their families.

Magnific Moment
Children’s Bags
During the summer, our Children’s Church program will be shorter than it is during the school year. We will be returning to the sanctuary before the end of worship each week. Remember that there are bags with activities for children in the narthex.
Please note that these bags are to be returned at the end of worship. Do not take the bags home with you. If there are mini coloring books or word puzzle booklets that your child started, feel free to bring those home, but please drop off the bag and the fidget toys in the narthex when you leave.
September Pancake Kickoff (and Sunday Morning Programs!)
We will start the new program year with our third-annual Pancake Breakfast Kickoff on Sunday, September 15. So plan to eat breakfast at the church that Sunday. The following week (September 22), Kidbury UMC will reopen along with two Christian formation opportunities for adults and the second year of our Youth Sunday Morning Devo.
Kidbury UMC is in Hawes Hall, the Youth Devo is in the youth room below the sanctuary, the Upper Room group meets in the O’Reilly Room, and Exploring Topics in Christianity meets in the chapel. There is something for all ages on Sunday mornings, and all of the classes/programs are from 9:15 - 9:45 a.m.

Donations of School Supplies Needed!
We blessed backpacks last Sunday before the school year begins next week. Several students and teachers brought their backpacks with them to worship to be blessed!
We have purchased six backpacks for youngsters who might need some help equipping themselves with the necessary supplies. We are collecting supplies to give to Noyes School. If you are able to purchase the supplies needed, please follow this link: Backpack List. Please be sure to put an X or Yes next to your purchases to avoid duplication. You may bring the supplies to church or have them shipped here. We have the backpacks and we will coordinate packing each one with the appropriate supplies! Thanks for your help!

Support Kate and Zack!
Dear SUMC friends:
We know that Kate and Zack Moser are expecting in mid-August. Many of us benefitted from having meals provided during those early days of having a baby at home, and we'd like to offer the same assistance to Kate and Zack. We're planning a sign-up for two weeks, where people can offer to provide a dinner for each of the first 14 days of September. All meals should be brought to SUMC during the day where they can be kept in the fridge. Zack and Kate have asked that all meals be vegetarian and organic. If you'd like to take a date, please contact Heather Josselyn-Cranson at (hjosselyn@hotmail.com). Thanks for helping to support Kate and Zack and their Little One!
Musical Notes
- Singing School
Rob and Kevin will offer a new musical project this coming program year, starting with the first choir rehearsal, Thursday evening, August 29th: "Singing School"
It is our perception that sight-singing has been in steady decline in contemporary culture for some time. The reasons are numerous and complex, but the outcome for our choral work here at SUMC is a continual drop in the number of voices that read choral music and that are familiar with the basics of singing. So, we are creating a class in sight reading music.
We will restructure Thursday evening rehearsals starting August 29 to feature Gospel Group at 6:30 p.m., Schola at 7:15 p.m., and Chancel Choir rehearsal from 7:45 p.m. till 9:15 p.m. This structure will allow:
- Our Gospel Group singers, who work primarily by ear, to choose to acquire more sight singing skills immediately after their meeting.
- ANYONE in the SUMC community who wishes to learn how to sight sing to come at a weekly time that is not too early for working adults and not too late for youngsters and seniors every Thursday.
- Interested residents from Sudbury and neighboring towns who want to improve their singing to take advantage of a free continuing education opportunity.
We plan to livestream and record "Singing School" so as to provide materials for those who are not able to attend every session and for those who may wish to connect with our project from a distance.
There are no prerequisites for "Singing School". Just show up. We will meet you where you are vis à vis your singing voice and how you wish to use it. Rob and I have long experience in working with choral music and, between us, there is pretty much no singing situation we have not seen. So take a break from whatever it is that is claiming your time Thursday evenings and join us. We would love to have you in class! Yes, you!

The new choir season starts with two meetings, Thursday evenings August 29 & September 5 (7:45-9:15 p.m.), before we hit the Chancel on Sunday, September 8.
BONUS: New singers can decide when they're comfortable singing on a Sunday morning -- now, later, or much later!

Sudbury UMC Hosts A Red Sox Baseball Event!
On a hopefully, sunny Sunday afternoon, September 8th, Sudbury UMC is excited to host a special event at Fenway Park in Boston. The beloved Red Sox will be facing off against the Chicago White Sox at 1:35 PM, and the church community is invited to join in the fun.
This event is open to everyone, and all are welcome to sign up to attend the game. It’s a fantastic opportunity for families, friends, and baseball enthusiasts to come together and enjoy America’s favorite pastime in one of the most iconic ballparks in the country.
Tickets are $42.00 each. We are trying to coordinate transportation and more information will be provided soon, ensuring that everyone can easily make their way to Fenway Park and back. Whether you’re a die-hard Red Sox fan or just looking for a fun outing, this event promises to be a memorable day filled with excitement, camaraderie, and the thrill of baseball.
Mark your calendars and get ready to cheer on the Red Sox with your fellow church members and friends. Let’s make this a day to remember!
Eagle Scout Project Is Underway – It’s Not Too Late to Contribute!
Katelyn Stagno, a rising junior at Lincoln-Sudbury High School, and a Scout in Troop 65 which is hosted by SUMC, has begun her Eagle Scout Community Service project. She’s working with SUMC and Sunny Hill on constructing a new 10x12 ft storage shed to replace the existing shed on the playground. This need was identified by the Trustees and Sunny Hill and she is happy to be a part of this project and give back to the community that hosts her Troop. She has raised some of the $1,000 to cover some of the expenses. Any and all donations are greatly appreciated and can be made to SUMC, with a note or memo “Eagle Scout Project”. Donating Sunday Morning Altar Flowers
The Flower Team welcomes altar flower donations. To choose a date, visit a user-friendly website : July - December Sign-Up Genius. Please use the comment section to note if your gift is intended to be in honor or in memory of someone special. And if you have specific flowers in mind, please share that information in the comment section. Checks in the amount of $50.00 to cover the cost of the flowers can be made out to Sudbury United Methodist Church with a notation in the memo field indicating “Flower donation.” Thanks.

Food Pantry Donations
Donations to our church’s shopping cart may be left at the O’Reilly Room entrance Monday through Friday. The best canned items to donate include solid white tuna, fruits, and vegetables. Raisins in boxes, dried beans, condensed milk, rice pilaf, pancake mix, syrup, pasta and pasta sauce in jars, macaroni and cheese, instant coffee, laundry detergent, shampoo, soap, feminine care products, and wipes are also appreciated. Whenever you shop – or have groceries delivered to your home – please remember the food cart! Please also be mindful of expiration dates.
