Sudbury Votes to Leave Minuteman, Move to Assabet Valley

After months of deliberation, a committee has voted to switch districts for Sudbury's vocational students to Assabet Valley in Marlborough.

SUDBURY, MA—A committee on Monday voted to leave the Minuteman Regional Technical Vocational School District and instead join the Assabet Valley Regional Technical High School as an option for those Sudbury students who choose to attend a vocational school.

The Vocational Educational Guidance Committee picked Assabet as its preferred choice, making Sudbury one of six towns that are leaving the district, reports Wicked Local Arlington. The other five towns leaving the district are Boxborough, Carlisle, Lincoln, Wayland and Weston.

For months, debate and questions surrounded the proposed exit from the Minuteman District, which was supported by Sudbury's Board of Selectmen, and ultimately brought to special town meeting (at which voters chose to leave).

In January, Sudbury joined the 15 others in the district to adopt and accept a new regional agreement which would give those towns the option of leaving. In March, all 16 towns in the district approved a regional agreement to allow for a building project to move forward, though six of the towns made decisions to take steps to withdraw from the district, reports the Boston Globe. Sudbury cited concerns over the way the school was run, and the cost to the town, as reasons to leave.

Guidance Committee member Dave Manjarrez told WickedLocalthat Nashoba Valley and Keefe Technical High School were also considered as alternatives, but that the administration didn't appear to be open to new students.
