SUDBURY, MA — Two loose leporids led Sudbury police on a foot chase Sunday — an event that serves as a reminder about how to surrender unwanted pets.

Police on Sunday received a report of a domesticated rabbit seen hopping around near a road. After a lot of footwork, two officers were able to catch the rabbit, which they named "Hop." A second rabbit nearby proved too fast for police, and got away.

Officials believe the owner probably abandoned the animals. But surrendering unwanted pets to either a local animal control officer or a shelter is always a better option.

"Given the location and the number of animals, it’s suspected that they were abandoned by their caretakers. We’re glad we were able to rescue one, but please, surrender animals to our ACO, or a local shelter," police said in a social media post.
