Working out While on Vacation

Summer is the best time for a vacation!  Kids are out of school, the weather is warm, the beaches are calling for you, and you cannot resist.  For a lot of people, going on vacation means a break from their work life, everyday stresses, and hectic daily routine; and unfortunately sometimes their workout.  However, it is important to remember that going on vacation does not mean that you need to sacrifice your workout.  Working out while on vacation is a test of your commitment and willingness to live a healthy lifestyle.  It is OK to ease back on the amount that you exercise while on vacation, because vacations are meant to be relaxing and an escape from your daily life. Nevertheless, you do not want to drop your whole fitness routine that you worked so hard to achieve.  If you are going somewhere that you know will not have the normal facility that you are used to working out in, we have some great exercises that can be done right on the floor of your room or at your vacation site!

Walk/run-going for a walk or a run is a great way to get in some exercise while admiring your location.  If you are not a runner, take a nice long walk and enjoy your scenery.  If you are a runner, explore your new surroundings with a refreshing run.

Yoga poses-going through some simple yoga poses in the comfort of your room can be very helpful.  It can relax your mind and ease your tension, which is what vacation is about!  Your poses do not need to be extravagant, but should challenge you while also relaxing you.

Planks/crunches/push-ups- create a small circuit to do.  Try some 30 second or one minute planks (normal and one arm), a variation of push-ups (whether they are wall push-ups, half push-ups, or standard military pushups), and add in some crunches as well to get your core rocking.  Go through your circuit a couple of times and you will feel great!

Take advantage of your location-are there mountains to hike, lakes/oceans/pools to swim in, beaches to walk/run, places to bike, bodies of water to kayak/canoe/waterski on?  Depending on your location, there will be some awesome ways to get in a workout.  If you explore your surroundings, you will find something fun to do that not may not feel like a workout at the time but will make you feel accomplished afterwards and appreciate what your vacation spot has to offer!
