• $788K in grants to boost Franklin County food systems, farm capacity (recorder.com) — Sunderland's Teddy Smiarowski III Farm is receiving $138,374 to buy a refrigerated vehicle, part of nearly $788,000 in new grants boosting Franklin County food and farm infrastructure. The funding, through the state's Food Security Infrastructure Grant Program, will help local farms and nonprofits expand storage, processing, and safe delivery of fresh food. These investments strengthen markets and food access for Sunderland residents.
• Local Farmer Awards funders visit western Mass. farms to see impact of grants (wwlp.com) — Grant funders recently toured several western Massachusetts farms, including Reed Farm in Sunderland, to see how small capital grants are improving daily operations. The Local Farmer Awards program has invested over $2 million in more than 330 farms since 2015, helping with equipment, efficiency, and climate resilience. Sunderland farmers benefit directly from this ongoing regional support.
• Town of Amherst receives $296,000 grant to replace failing culverts (wwlp.com) — Amherst has secured nearly $300,000 to design replacements for two failing culverts and also won a separate grant to redesign the Sunderland Road culvert over Eastman Brook in North Amherst. These upgrades aim to reduce flooding, protect drinking water, and improve wildlife passage. Sunderland-area drivers using Sunderland Road could see safer, more resilient infrastructure in coming years.
