SWAMPSCOTT, MA — While Swampscott officialls and advocates have spent years looking to clean up the waters of the town's beaches, there are new early summer concerns about the shoreline after officials said litterbugs have left a mess the past two weekends.
The Swampscott Recreation posted a video of a trash-strewn stretch of sand following the Memorial Day weekend.
"Our beaches are a gift, not a trash can," the post said. "Over the last two weekends, our DPW crews and residents have had to spend time cleaning up large amounts of litter left behind at our beaches.
"While we appreciate their hard work, this should not be happening. Please remember to clean up after yourselves and help us protect the coastline we all love."
There is a "carry in, carry out" trash policy at Swampscott beaches.
Littering fines for beaches are in place and will be enforced for those who get caught leaving behind their refuse.
"Respect the beach, wildlife, neighbors, and fellow visitors," the Recreation said. "Let’s all do our part to keep Swampscott clean, safe, and beautiful this summer."
