Swampscott's Aidan Emmerich Wins Mass. Amateur Golf Title

The Swampscott golfer beat Zac Georgantas 8 & 6 Saturday and earned a U.S. Amateur exemption.

WINCHESTER, MA — Aidan Emmerich of Swampscott won the Massachusetts Amateur Championship on Saturday, pulling away from Zac Georgantas of Foxborough Country Club for an 8 & 6 victory in the 36-hole final at Winchester Country Club.

Emmerich, a Kernwood Country Club member and recent Temple University graduate, entered the afternoon round with a 1-up lead after preserving the edge on the 18th hole in the morning session.

He then turned the match decisively in the second half, shooting 4-under-par 31 to build a margin Georgantas could not erase.

The win made Emmerich the first Kernwood member to capture the Massachusetts Amateur and the first North Shore golfer to win the title since Swampscott native Steven DiLisio did so in 2019 at The Country Club. Emmerich had reached the semifinals last year at GreatHorse and returned this season determined to go further.

During match play this week, Emmerich defeated Brian Li, past champions Ben Spitz and Matthew Naumec, and co-medalist Max McColgan before reaching the final. Georgantas, an incoming Providence College freshman playing in his first Massachusetts Amateur, advanced to the title match after beating Joey Monahan, Ricky Stimets, Nolan Skaggs and Jake Mrva.

As he and his caddie prepared for the second round of the final, Emmerich said: "I’m not playing around. I want to win this damn thing."

One of the defining moments came at the par-3 9th in the afternoon, when Emmerich led by five holes and decided to attack a tucked flag after mostly aiming for the center of Winchester’s greens.

"I said: 'I've been playing to the middle of the green, and it's time to go at the flag,'" Emmerich said.

From 156 yards, his shot finished inside three feet, and the birdie gave him a 6-up lead with nine holes to play.

Emmerich also pointed to a favorable bounce on Winchester's 4th hole as a turning point. In the morning, a drive that appeared headed out of bounds struck a tree and stayed in play. In the afternoon, another drive on the same hole found the right rough, and his approach stopped within tap-in range to extend the lead.

"That bounce was...I feel like what kind of started the big run," Emmerich said. "I'm like, 'this is go time.'"

"It's an honor. It's something I've worked for so long," he added that the title, which comes with a U.S. Amateur exemption, could shape his next step. "This helps out the future.

"I was very indecisive about pursuing professional golf or getting the J-word — a job. I think this shows that when I believe in myself, the sky can be the limit."
