SWAMPSCOTT, MA — Six responding Swampscott police officers were recommended for a Police Star Award following their actions to protect the public while an armed man with an apparent self-inflicted wound was in distress in the Stop & Shop parking lot late last month.
Officer Stephen Coughlin responded to the store lot on the morning of Sept. 28 to find the man brandishing a weapon and suffering from an apparent injury in front of several unaware bystanders.
Police Chief Ruben Quesada said Coughlin talked to the man in a calm manner until fellow officers arrived and then attended to the victim as his condition worsened, as fellow officers evacuated those in the immediate vicinity.
The victim succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
Quesada credited the officers for balancing the "safety of others while simultaneously providing a compassionate approach to a highly chaotic and evolving situation."
Sgt. Jonathan Loyte, Officer Coughlin, Officer Justin Bragan, Officer Samantha Holey, School Resource Officer Brian Wilson and Officer Kevin Reen were recommended for the Police Star Award given to officers who "by their actions promote bravery and honor."
"This was a very unfortunate and traumatic event for all involved," Quesada said. "Our hearts go out to the individual and their family members, and to everyone who witnessed or who was affected by what happened that morning.
"I cannot extend enough gratitude for the brave and selfless acts of our officers that day. They moved toward a dangerous situation to protect the public and to try to save a life, and they did so with the utmost professionalism and compassion.
"Incidents like this remain with those who answer them. I want each of these officers to know that our department and community thank them for their actions that day."
Those in emotional distress, or who know someone struggling with mental health issues, drug or alcohol use, or are just in need of immediate support, are urged to contact the 988 Suicide Prevention Lifeline, where trained counselors are ready to provide confidential help 24/7/365.
