A few hours of sunshine over the weekend and everyone is at the library looking for books on gardening. To misquote a famous quotation, “ Yes Virginia, there is a spring”. Everyone is ready to go out and garden and make their yards more beautiful. It is strange, we had a very mild winter and yet we do still long for spring.
If you are a novice gardener then perhaps Gardening for Dummies (not to insult you) by Steven A. Frowine or The Garden Primer by Barbara Damrosch will be two great books to pick up. If you have visions of making salads from your garden or freezing vegetables for the winter, then The Edible Garden by Hazel White, et al, is a great book. If you want to insure that what you grow in completely natural then the The Organic Home Garden by Patrick Lima is the book for you.
If you worry that there may not be enough water to protect your gardens this summer because of the lack of snow and rain during the winter months, then Waterwise Plants for Sustainable Gardens is a great resource. Finally, we do live right by the sea so plants that would thrive in this climate are desirable, A Garden by the Sea by Leila Hadley is a must.
