Top 3 Things to Do This Weekend if You'd Rather Be at the Beach

Donate a gift card to the senior class beachy post-prom party; enjoy the beach at the SYC Open House Sat. afternoon; sort through beachwear at Big Blue Bargains Sat. morning!

1. LIfe's a Beach!

Donate an unused (or purchased) gift card to be spun on a wheel at the Senior Class post-prom party, a cost- and substance-free event to be held at the high school on Tuesday, May 29, from midnight to 4:00 a.m. A beachy atmosphere in the atrium will have the kids ditching their shoes and putting on shades as we add a little Vegas. Seniors' names (and guests', if we get enough cards) will be drawn in a raffle all night long to take turns at spinning the wheel for all kinds of cards--and cash! Please bring a $10 gift card (or two!) to the high school office; if you need us to, we'll pick them up! Contact awgold62@gmail.com.

2. Speaking of beach...

The Swampscott Yacht Club hosts its annual open house on Saturday, May 19 from 3 to 5 p.m. Located (by scent?) on the second floor of the Historic Fish House, the 'townie' yacht club hosts friendly activities throughout the year for landlubbers and boaters alike. Membership is affordable and the launch can't be beat! Wander out to the new porch and tear yourself away from the view to check out the renovated 'back' room, through what will soon become a commercial kitchen to serve the growing community. Sail, swim, fish, sun, motor, kayak, paddle-- what more could you want? Contact don.pinkerton@comcast.net for more info.

3. Big Blue Bargains...for beachwear?

You wouldn't believe the inventory at Big Blue Bargains, located behind the Swampscott Middle School (via the rear driveway on Forest Ave.). Following are are some of the treasures I found during a recent shift at the store: beachwear, especially men's swimming trunks and tee-shirts-- as well as shorts, shirts, pants, suits and shoes (for dress, hiking, biking and walking the beach); formal evening wear for women, especially sizes 4-10, as well as all sizes of shirts, skirts, pants, jackets and shoes; a small charcoal grill; fancy & everyday dishes, cookware, stemware; blankets, curtains, rugs, frames, lamps and every kind of knick knack; a very large dog crate; a high-back, black leather office chair; a child's desk, mirrors, books, dvds, toys, games and sporting equipment; children's clothes, baby clothes and equipment. You have to see it to believe it--and to a great extent, sort it! BBB is seeking volunteers to handle donations from the community, which can be dropped off during store hours: Weds 9-11 and Sat 9-1. Most items are priced between $2 and $4; Swampscott schools split the proceeds, divided by the volunteer hours parents put in at the shop. It's fun! It's social, the time flies, and you never know what you'll find...contact your school representative to get on the calendar!
