The third and final talk of the 250th anniversary “Glovers at Goldthwait” series, which will be presented at the Goldthwait Beach Reservation on Sunday, September 6, has a new start time of 1 pm instead of 11 am. The program and parking are free, and light refreshments provided, but please bring your own chair. At this talk, social, architectural, and cultural historian Judy Anderson will bring out of the shadows the six wives of the four Glover brothers, and some compelling stories about some of their 28 total children, giving a vivid portrait of Revolutionary-era family life in Marblehead. She will introduce Colonel Glover's eldest son and namesake, a captain in his father's regiment, who lost his life due to his ship-board service in 1777, the same year his father was promoted to General, along with the other ten children of John and his first wife Hannah, who died in the middle of her husband's seven long years of service through the entire Revolutionary War. Mystery surrounds the only son of John's oldest brother Jonathan, whose wife Abigail bore nine children as well. Their five surviving daughters and many of John's sons and daughters married into familiar Marblehead families. Some of their stories are compelling, and others are tragic. And all four Glover brothers suffered grave family losses, as so many other 'Headers did. Judy Anderson is recognized as one of the leading authorities on the life and Mansion of Colonel Jeremiah Lee and Marblehead’s rare early architecture, its virtually unknown silversmiths (who also served in Colonel Glover's Regiment, alongside the fishermen, mariners, tradesmen and merchants’ sons), its high-quality 18th-century furniture production and patronage, and its surprisingly high number of 18th-century portraits by leading New England and American artists.
